I'm curious to see how many people actually remember an arcade game by SEGA called Shinobi? He was a bad *** Ninja.

Oh man, you're young. You must be referring to the PlayStation shinobi. I'm talking about THE very first arcade.

The ninja we got is so lame in comparison. I honestly bought this game in anticipation for a proper ninja and we got some raggedy pretender who doesn't even have a sword. And that twirl he does is so embarrassing, same for the pose on the loading screen.

I don't know, he seems pretty cool to me. He should have a sword, but I guess the kusarigama changes up the strategies.
It'll be interesting to see what other Japanese heroes come out next.

Joe Musashi is still and always will be the best ninja around
Ryu Hayabusa, even if cool, will always be 2nd.

Plus, the world recordman of Shinobi is french. Yeah, a little bit chauvinism from time to time won't kill anyone :p
Ben-Shinobi (http://benjamin.bouloch.free.fr/ben-shinobi.htm) (no wonder from where he got his name), top arcade superplayer on old arcade games. You should also watch his runs in classics like Bubble Bobble, the Makaimura series (Ghosts'n Goblins / Ghouls'n Ghosts for us...) or Solomon's key. Some of his replays are downloadable on the page I linkled.
All his official records were made and validated following the japanese Gamest or Arcadia standards.
He's also a big shmup player who holds his ground in games like Radiant Silvergun or Ikaruga.
And a very nice guy on top of that.

And yes, I'm not that young ;)

For real, i lovvvved that game. And the red scarf ninja was strider, right?

Yes, Strider Hiryu had a red scarf, but not on his first appearance in game (another great arcade classic, and if you liked Strider Hiryu I urge you to play Osman, a very little known arcade treasure). He had it till the beginning in the 80's manga, but his game model only got it when his sprite was redesigned for the Marvel Vs Capcom series

Like Joe, who also got a red scarf eventually, but not on his first appeareance in the original Shinobi neither.
It was in the PS2 game, not in the original arcade and 8 - 16 bits era games.

And now I feel old.
