Well... to my knowedge (which is woefully inadequate) it was never at the Eastern Front in WWII. I think it's a great bird, but anyone know if it was at the Eastern front in any substantial numbers?

Well, it was very active around Berlin in 1944-1945...BTW, Berlin is one of the maps included in FB. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I guess my question then is, does this map include Western force airbases? I honestly don't know. If the game includes Western force airbases, I would join you in asking where the plane is. Quite honestly, I've been so happy that the game is no longer a slide show on my lil 'puter that I've not paid attention. If in the Battle for Berlin, the map only has Eastern bases, well, then the question is, were there any P-51's based at the Eastern Front?

Anyone out there know the answer to these questions?

XyZspineZyX
08-18-2003, 09:16 PM
Did the B and C versions have the range to get to the East?

I'm pretty sure that some D's flew into Russia ... before staging on to Italy and back to Britain. I'm not aware that the B's (or C's) were allowed to make the journey.

BTW ... apart from maufacturer, what was the major difference between the B and the C?
Those WIP shots seem to suggest that the C had a Malcolm hood - but that would just be convinient for the game, and for selection.

Excellent question TaZ.

The P-51D is ready and a few other a/c are too. It would be very easy for someone over at Oleg's house to let us know about when to expect them. It would be polite too, considering the number of folks who are waiting.

To my knowledge NO Mustangs ever participated in the eastern front battles. As this game portrays the eastern front conflict, I would really be disappointed to see them inclded.

If, in an add-on for the western front, they were added then I could accept that.

Same for Corsairs. Give it up on adding planes that didn't serve on the eastern front. Wait for an add-on for other theatres.

Yeah, Boosher, "Two Weeks" is a joke around here. The only words from Ubi or Oleg are, "soon after patch" and "later".

Well, I guess you've missed out on a bit of history then.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Here's a link about one tidbit of history:

http://www.nationalaviation.org/museum_enshrinee.asp?eraid=3&enshrineeid=323

"When World War II broke out in Europe, Lowell Thomas persuaded the commander of a front line fighter plane base to let him have a P-51 and a pilot to fly him over Berlin as it burned under the barrage of Allied bombing in the final days of the war...he described the final battle between the Germans and Russians from a P-51 Mustang."

Sounds like not everyone forgot about "The Battle for Berlin" after all...lol!

Well the Mustangs, were quite active over Romania and Hungary,(togheter with the P-38's) in escorting B-24 and B-17 atacking targets there, in the foloing scenario: They left Italy attacked Hungarian and Romanian targets, and then the remaining(/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) planes landed in Russia, and the next day they repeated the attack, while returning to Italy,
I am not very sure if after the mission over Hungary they wnt directly to Russia or went back to Italy, but this scenario was sure used over Romania.
So, IMO, would be cool to have them around.

I will enjoy the fact (virtually) of flying an aircraft that means so much to me. I understood why Oleg did not include it in the patch, but I was very disappointed.

The skins Oleg has for Mustangs in FB are the skins of some of the squads that flew on the Eastern front (325th & 31st). Mustangs from the 332ndFG (Redtails),325thFG (Checkertails) and I believe the 31st FG, 52ndFG, 317th & 318th FSs plus P-38s from the 81st, not to mention the bomber squadrons..(cant remember them but they were from the 15th AF..) all flew on the Eastern Front in Hungary, Romania, Czecoslovakia..(did I spell that right?? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif ) and Russia. So Mustangs were indeed there..they just weren't flown by Russians.

For Painter: http://www.p51.mustangsmustangs.com/p51specs.shtml That should answer your questions about the differences.

There were some Bs & Cs but mostly Ds..at least with the 332ndFG anyway.... the 302nd of the 332nd flew Cs into Russia..but I believe the 99th, 100th and 301st of the 332nd flew Cs & Ds. I think the 325th was flying Bs, Cs and Ds but mostly Ds. The 31st flew the P-51s with the red stripes on the tails in FB and they flew Bs and Ds.
Some P-51s did have the Malcolm hood, most if not all of them were P-51Bs..however most Bs had the same kind of canopy as the P-51Cs. The ones with the Malcolm hood were flown by the 353rd FG, the 354th FG, and the 356th FG. I dont believe the Malcolm hodded ones went to the East.

hey guys were is this gonna stop? i think your asking to much of oleg .p51 ,p47, spitfires, ferchrissake this is a eastern front sim,.....i know we all want a sim like this to incorperate the whole battlefied but lets keep the aircraft involved theater to say 500ea known to be in combat min, ie. no weird or rare a/c...that way oleg and co. can focous on this sim.... yes of course i would love oleg to do a pacific theater and maybe integrate it but since we all know the time and work it takes to just do this theater just imagine a whole slew of new a/c and circomstances. lets be happy with our nich (eastern front)

IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT BEING AN EASTERN FRONT ONLY SIM!!!!
That was IL-2. This is a totaly differnet sim. so thta's why you see all of these ac from differant theaters. that and ppl like Gibbage took the time/money/& work to model them. Oleg wants the p-51/p-38/p-80. it's his sim and his call as to what planes and maps are in it. So you eastern front only guys get over it. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif lol

copperhead your right it does not say anything about it being a eastern front only sim , but you being the intelligent man that i know you are ( from your posts) you will note that the majority of things that have and are being worked on are eastern front ac and or a modifacation of the il-2 ac, and i believe that is where this sims heart lies............. now i know what ac you want to fly and i am glad to see the (cream of the crop ) here wanting to see p-51vs bf-109 etc hell i do to (hungary) but if if you look hard into the abilities of our computers /harddrive allocations etc what im trying to say is that a sim of the perportions that we want will take up tremendus space and ability (relative to now) so in conclusion lets stay focused we can move forth from here in say about 6 months

'O come on now guys say what you mean and mean what you say. Stop beating around with what you want to say and say it.

The games a first! Ami's didn't buy it in mass and don't fly it unlike the other games! Its sold more copies in europe than it did in the states!

Wonder why. Could it be the best plane they have to fly is the 39? A decidely un-sexy sim plane for american fliers.

Eastern sim my ear. I've flown the off line missions. I've done some co-ops. Nothing there that would ruin your eastern experience even with the pony available in game.

But the online red vs. blue of eastern sims? Gawd forbide that the 7 190s fighting each other should see a pony in the mix.

Bring it on. I'm tired of the 09s and the 190s in game. Been there done that sort of thing. Yawn.....

Yes, the P-38 should be a blast to fly. I hope that the twin engine modeling will be more accurate by then though. The He-111 feels like someone's drug-induced idea of how a twin flies.

To answer your questions on P-51 B and C differences, their range, and their use in the East European front.
(It doesn't look that B and C were equipped with the MH bubble glass)

North American P-51B / P-51C Mustang - In the pursuit of still more range, a P-51B was experimentally fitted with an extra 85 US gallon self-sealing fuel tank behind the pilot's seat, bringing the total fuel to 419 US gallons (including 2 drop tanks). Although the Mustang already offered outstanding range performance, this additional fuel made it even better. This extra range was being demanded by expanding operations in both the European and Pacific theatres. However, this extra fuel tank moved the center of gravity aft, which made the directional stability of the Mustang quite poor, so that the pilot would have to spend the first hour or so concentrating on keeping his airplane pointed in the right direction until this new tank was finally empty. The last 550 P-51B-5-NAs were fitted with this extra tank, becoming P-51B-7-NAs, and into P-51C-1-NTs, becoming P-51C-3-NT. In addition, some earlier P-51Bs and Cs were modified in the field to accommodate this tank. In service, however, the directional instability caused by the presence of a full fuel tank behind the pilot's seat was a hazard for new or inexperienced pilots, and the tank was usually restricted to 65 US gallons. This extra tank, nevertheless, still made a crucial difference in combat radius, and it was standard equipment in all future production versions. With this extra fuel, Mustangs were able to escort bombers all the way to Berlin from bases in Britain.

Production of the Merlin engined versions began in 1943 with the P-51B, of which 1,988 were built at North American's Inglewood, California factory, and with the generally similar P-51C, of which 1,750 were built in a new factory at Dallas, Texas. Both differed from the earlier versions by having a strengthened fuselage, redesigned ailerons and armament of four 12.7 mmn (0.50 in) machine guns.

I agree! Why some Italian plane like MC202 (flyable!!!) or Fiat G.55? This one had a 1,475 HP DB605, three MG 151/20 cannons + 2 12.7 mm machine guns and climbed at 6000 m in 7 min... not so bad...

It would appear that some did get the hood"

"After these Mustang III aircraft had been delivered to England, the RAF decided that the hinged cockpit canopy offered too poor a view for European operations. A fairly major modification was made in which the original framed hinged hood was replaced by a bulged Perspex frameless canopy that slid to the rear on rails. This canopy gave the pilot much more room and the huge goldfish bowl afforded a good view almost straight down or directly to the rear. This hood was manufactured and fitted by the British corporation R. Malcolm & Co., and came to be known as the "Malcolm Hood". This hood was fitted to most RAF Mustang IIIs, and many USAAF Eighth and Ninth Air Force P-51B/C fighters received this modification as well. "

Now that you tell me this, I'm remembeing that I also read this somewhere on a book... long time ago.
Looks again that if it was not for the British giving P-51 a good engine and the bubble glass, Mustang would have been not as much as it was.. maybe just a more modern P-40...

For thoses who don't know OPERATION FRANTIC the Americans had wanted 6 airbases with 2000 men as logistical support. in Russia but ,were only given 3 with half the manpower. In June 1944 the first american B-17's accompanied by P-51's arrived.Poltava,Mirgorod and Piryatin(Piryatin in the Ukraine)were the 3 air-bases chosen and given to the Americans by the Russians.Russians were not allowed to mingle with the Americans.

The British were against the idea dealing with the Russians and Stalin before.

The air-craft would leave from Britain and Italy to attack Berlin installations and to support the Russian offencive on the ground. The Russians new it would help them advance in the war.

In return the Russians would give fighter cover with YAK-9's(most flown aircraft by the way in that time frame) of the 210th fighter group.

So to make a long story short the Russians didn't cover the American bases by sending up planes to defend them and the Americans suffered thier highest loses in the war.Dissappointed the Americans withdrew and the Russians gained American technology like the Norden bombsight(the British weren't even allowed it).And advanced engine technology too for that time.

The Russians were the big winners out of that deal http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Some say that it was one of the things that caused the '' Cold War''

Yes in fact P-51's did have the range to fly and land in Russia refuel and head back to England and Italy

I like history what can I say! hehehe
