I really like the IL2 original, which I bought some weeks ago. Now I'm thinking of buying CFS2 and their add on :Vietnam Air War. I can't wait to climb into the cockpit of a Skyraider to bomb Vietnamese civilians.

However, am I going to be dissapointed with the game, now that I'm used to IL2? How it the graphics and game feeling? Any inputs regading CFS2 and the "Vietnam" is highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Ivan

CFS2 is good but now outclassed by IL-2. It has problems, like all flight sims, but I had a good time playing it. The online aspect, on the "Zone", is pretty crappy.

much better online playing, no lag

worse in most other senses, especially that it doesnt have the mouse view option

I enjoyed CFS2 though not it's nowhere near as good as IL2 or FB.Unfortunately due to it's open ended nature cheating is rife online, unless you stick to 'Stock Planes Only' servers.

Hi Ivan,

I used to fly in Microsoft Flight sim 2000 online, mostly gliders, the Extra and Cessna. I then moved onto CFS2 online in a squad and then WW1 squad and tryed to set up a 1950s squad /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

As with most things CFS2 seemed very good to me at the time, but all the 50+ addon aircraft from AV history to install and some more addons made it pritty annoying and took a long time to set up /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif . I did not see much cheating online and there is a utility to make sure there isn't.

Remember Vietnam was not really an air war only bombing and transporting troops. I dont know why you said you want to shoot civilians,,,
I think it is better you get the 1950s addon, much more fun fighting Migs or Sabres at high alt.
Good game to pass the time but not as good as IL2

The numerous add-ons and enhancements make it much better than stock...and there is a ton. Its open source nature is why I enjoyed it because the community was very involved with creativity. Like others have said though, honest online play might be difficult.

I liked its single person play about the same as Il2, but there's no question its much different. If you're used to the feel of Il2 planes, initially, CFS2 planes may not seem real.

There are a few aftermarket fixes for problems; MS never bothered with any patches. If you decide on it, don't purchase it until you're able to obtain the roll-bug fix.

I noticed that the game's FM's were kind of weird. It was too easy to shoot, landing was too easy, and most of all, the campaigns were too easy, with that "x" button feature that terminates all the waiting.

The "X" button was one of my favorite functions http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but the differences you've pointed out are real. Its a comparison of 2 very different flight sims and it can easily cause one to wonder what realism means. For me both were enjoyable and challenging (Il2 more so) and that's all that mattered.

CFS2 is a great sim, I have had hours of fun with it, but I'm also a big fan of the Pacific theatre. Out of all my sims I have had the most fun with it and EAW.

The mission builder is a great part of the game, and very easy to use. It's fun trying to recreate actual historical missions. Oleg could have learned a little from MS on that one. The IL-2 mission builder is nowhere near as user-friendly.

CFS1 and CFS2 were great, had mucho fun, at least before all the cheaters took it over. But even then, squad games were still great. But that was years ago, the game is old and way out classsed now.

Oh and IL2's mission builder is way better. Maybe a tad harder to learn, but has lots more to offer.

CFS2 sucks in every aspect but

A: Carrier landings
B: Easyness of replacing custom engine sounds and cockpit

Stock engine sounds and cockpits simply suck big time!!! I immediatly replaced them with better third party (free) stuff.

CFS2 was a huge dissapoitment for CFS1 fans.

The game is so bugged, online you can't even select how much fuel you want. There is a mod that let's you do it, so then the game gets divided up into dumpers and non-dumpers. And hosting, if you do a free for all the host can't even go back to the room to get a different plane, he'll get locked out of his own server. And there were actually less stock planes tham CFS1. Huge dissapointmet. And CFS3 followed suit.

Um no fuel settings online? I think there was when I last played it. I set them pritty much the same as here around 100% ammo and 50% fuel.
Also I liked the points sistem alot more than IL2 when you got to say 15 points the game would end and show a list of the best pilots and there scors.

There was a near unlimited map and not just fading to nothing like in IL2.
If they mixed CFS2 with IL2 it would be a much better game in my oppinion /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

CFS2 will be a huge dissapointment, both on and offline. you always can buy it but, Il-2 is much better flightsim.

There are currently no good flighsims on the market which play in the Vietnam area. You've got 'Strike fighters: Project 1' but, it feels like it is on a modified FMSFS engine and it does not look good.

The best vietnam alternative will be the vietnam add-on for falcon 4.0

I hated CSF2, he damage model was soooooooo simple.
There was only one result if your plane got hit by air or ground fire, your roll rate would slow done to a crawl.
I'd start a misssion every time thinking, "Well, my roll rate is going to suck if I get hit again." So predictable!!

The bug is even if you say to take 50% fuel, you'll still get 100% fuel when the online game starts.

Trust me, it's true. Just go to the CFS2 Zone room and you'll see game titles with "no fuel dump" etc. This means no "mods" to dump your fuel. (b/c there is a huge performance difference between 100% fuel and 10% fuel)

It is so pathetic that they didn't ever fix this with a simple patch it's unbelievable.

Cfs2 was the best of its time, just like how FB is the best of its time. Both suffer from unrealistic flight but fb has the capabilty of very realistic flight but its up to oleg and 1c. Im sure some good changes will happen since they are planning on releasing fb in jpn and will bring some more data for us "whiners" who provide proof of other then 1cs top secret data http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
