Hi all, I'm new to on-line gaming is it possible to play IL-2 via a 56K connection, or do I need to go and buy a broadband connection :-( ?

Perfectly possible. But stick to servers allowing only small number of players for best performance.

I'd never join a club that would have ME as a member!!.

i play on a 56k all the time - generally have to follow these guidelines though

pick games with a few players in or a maximum of no more than about 15 (although how good your ping is will affect this number)

pick servers with low pings

be aware of your ping - if mine is too high i tend to leave the game - so as not to disrupt other players
(in UBI Pressing 'S' will show your and everyone elses ping - generally i consider a ping under 400 OK - altough watch out for highly fluctuating pings as this is bad too)

generally i find i can have good games with anything up to about 10 players - more than that and it generally gets too laggy

i have had many a good game with my 56k connection - hope you do too /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yes, 56K is fine. I connect with dial up and have no problems. Follow all the above advice but I would recommend a couple other things.

First, don't connect via the internet. Go to "My Connection" and connect to your server. Then start up Hyperlobby. You connect directly that way. You'll still have to choose games where you get better pings but you'll get more games where you'll get decient pings.

Second, refers to first. I'd recommend Hyperlobby. There are two camps here regarding this. Some prefer UBI. Others prefer Hyperlobby. I think you'll find a broader variety of scenarios to choose from. Dogfight rooms, Co-ops, Scripted servers, and Online Wars. I also recommend getting to "know" certain people and even join a squadron.
And if you do join a squadron, voice comms makes the experiance 100% more immersive. Have fun. See you online.
