Sound.

I was just watching a trailer to the new ADD-ON for CFS3 and the sound blew me away. Alas, FB's sound is...dismal. =/

disabling sound "extensions" helps a little but overall IL2 had better sound than FB

Oleg knows it and he`s on it like white on rice.

XyZspineZyX

Yes, definitely. Flak has such an ominous sound and overall CFS3 has an entirely better sound scheme.

Examples:
-flak and ground bombings contain great deep BASS
-opening a canopy allows you to hear wind
-creaking sound of airframe (okay, maybe fake but cool)
-damaged craft have different sounds as you fly
-even just the intro music

Flying over a location that's throwing up large AAA is a sound to scare you. Adds to the realism big time.

Oleg has mentioned that the sounds are being reworked in the patch. I doubt FB will then touch CFS but at least it may get better.

cfs3 has a couple things FB needs, rocket effects, .50 cal sounds engine sounds, clouds and rain effect simulated tension on the elevator, rudder and ailerons when diving.

G's meter and something cfs3 doesnt have AIRFRAME OVERSTRESSING from G's

I don´t know what everybody has with FB sounds...I do like them. Well, there are a few things I miss from the original Il2, like the bullets whizzling, but otherwise, they´re great. I love the Yaks deep sound, as well as the Migs. I´m very fond of russian planes. But german ones are also fine, and I do like the doppler effect as well...I guess the patch will fix the existing bugs, which otherwise are minor.

Problem is that the sound of the russian planes are almost the same. You remember the sounds in IL2. Was really a joy , I miss that sound from a passing P-39. it was really clear. .50 cal guns are lame , I preffer something like the guns sound in CFS2 , that was reaally cool! Tagadam! tagadam. really cool. But for me not the sounds is the biggest problem. i want to see those aa snipers out either from griund , either from ships ! i want to see better performance of small caliber guns , like in IL2. I was chaasing yesterday an I-16 nd emptied all the magazine from less than 100 m. Not even smoke nd I'm sure I was aiming for the engine. whatever. Patch should come soon by now.

Yes, I´ve heard of this bug: german Mgs sometimes have no effect on russian planes...But I´m sure it will also be fixed. As well as many other things, as Oleg has announced. Just think: if at the moment, and despite all the bugs, FB is still the best WW2 flight sim ever released, what will it become once the patch released? Just the most awsome sim we ever had...I´m sure our patience will be compensated...

As for the bullets, yes it is. I suppose that pilots couldn´t hear the bullets buzzing by their cockpit while flying at 400 km/h, in a closed compartment and with a huge engine roaring just in front odf them...

The sounds of the P-51 and P-38 are very anoying and sound like the engine has a cold or something.

I don't fly those planes anymore because of this.

Another thing about the P-51 is the stall speed, even when flying 200 mph it stalls when turning.

I am glad I didn't waste money buying the game.

I think Oleg&Co are working on a new sound model for FB. As for the .50s you´re right - they sound more like "TINKATINKATINKATINKATINKA" - where the "TIN" is the hammer hitting the back of the cartridge (this is rather loud if you have ever tried standing next to a .50) & the "KA" is the round going of.

True,

some aicraft in CFS3 sound just like our lawnmower, the sewing machine my mother or like a lycoming engine from a Cessna. But the soundengine itself of CFS3 is better.

Zayets wrote:

That might be accurate, though. There are only a
few different sorts of engines.

Most of us have only ever encountered warbirds on
external fly bys at airshows. I am sure the cockpit
sound is a lot different.

Most of us are listening to the sounds
at comparatively low volumes on headphones or speakers.
To close to reality, you'd have to be pumping out
100 or more decibels to the extent that your body
is shaking. Maybe if you pump FB up to that, and
sit on a 'rumble seat' to simulate engine vibration
into the pilot's seat FB sounds ok?

There is a problem with the compromise between
neighbour-friendly volumes (and ones that don't
carry a health warning for your ears) and the perception
of those sounds.

Plus I suspect that adrenalin makes loud things
sound more impressive. When I did WW2 reenactment
objectively the guns sounded rather less impressive
the cannon-like sounds you hear on TV, but in the rush
of a mock battle, they seemed to get more impressive.

So is FB accurate in its sounds? At what volume? And
is it best to portrary accuracy or a more subjective 'feel'.

I think CFS3 does some thing better than IL2. Tracers look better. Padlock is better, and dynamic campaign actually work, not like FB broken campaigns.

XyZspineZyX
06-17-2003, 02:04 PM
The audio samples used in IL-2 and FB were a letdown for me, especially as the stock ones are low quality and there is no option to replace them. A decompressed sound FX folder, like it has been already done to the voice sample container, would be highly appreciated.

============================
When it comes to testing new aircraft or determining maximum performance, pilots like to talk about "pushing the envelope." They're talking about a two dimensional model: the bottom is zero altitude, the ground; the left is zero speed; the top is max altitude; and the right, maximum velocity, of course. So, the pilots are pushing that upper-right-hand corner of the envelope. What everybody tries not to dwell on is that that's where the postage gets canceled, too.

Everybody has different priorities and preferences, I for one don't care a flippin' rat's *** about how a game sounds!! I don't even care about graphics up to a point. I mean I don't care about what the ground looks like. I run with the ground detail on low and think that it looks fantastic. All I know is you guys will get your way and the sound will be addressed for those who care. But for us who don't, we'll be stuck with lower frame rates due to the higher drain that those better sounds will put on our systems. I say leave the sound as it is, frame rate and game playability is what really matters here, not eye or ear candy. Not all of us can afford to buy or build high-end systems like some of you guys can. It would be ok if they will have selectable sound quality settings, but they won't. You guys will get your way and make us all pay. Do you really want better sound at the price of lower frames????

XyZspineZyX
06-17-2003, 10:46 PM
well, i have found that the sound depends alot on the speaker setup

on my system i have 8 speakers and a subwoofer, FB sounds great

on the other system that i play it on has 2 little cheap speakers, it sounds horrible

the only reason its played on the other one is for lan games

Just out of curiosity, I can get MS CFS3 for US$ 8.00 right now (special deal in an internet store here in Sweden). Should I go for it? Is the flavor enough to satisfy a different aspect of flying (I've heard that the ground-pounding is better in CFS3 than FB), or is it so bad that I wont even load it up more than once? I realise this is a partial forum, but pleeease, try to keep it objective.

Actually in real life there are tons of accounts of pilots hearing enemy guns firing and or hitting them over the sound of their engine If you have ever heard a .50cal in real life you know that you can hear that thing over damn near anything. I'd expect that the same can be said for cannon, but I have only heard a .50cal.

I read a few posts about this pay ware add on by a member of the 1% team and it wasn't very positive.

I do have to say there are some things that are pretty nice in CFS3 but it's so easy it's not even remotely entertaining.

I mean, the Ju88's explode after a few hits and you can even blow up buildings and bunkers with your guns only.

(And yes, I have gun damage set to normal)
