View Full Version : was there any plane like that in WW2?

There were planes radar in them, and planes dropped chaff (called "window") to disrupt radar, and there were U-boats with radar emission detection device, but if you mean was there an aircraft that did what AWACS does, well, no. It's more than just a radar capability, as well. The closest thing would be a radar equipped plane that had a flight engineer of some type with binoculors (don't forget this ws the era of Eyeball Mk.I identification) giving radio instructions for interceptions. AWACS is pretty sophisticated.

yea yea, but what about a plane that flys very high and coordinate attacks, help pilots to get home etc..

To do what it does, an AWACS plane uses a software suite that WWII planes don't have. It is more than just a big radar equipped airplane.

The closest thing I can think of in WWII would be a multi-crewed aircraft with a radar set and a dedicated flight engineer (it's more difficult than just looking at a screen, in WWII radar). The flight engineer would have a high powered set of binoculars, because ranging optics were still of the vision magnifying type. The flight engineer would spot aircraft on the radar, instruct the pilot where to fly to track the contacts continually if possible, and if possible visually ID the aircraft using the binoculars. Then the flight engineer could contact other aircraft or a ground controller and inform them of the information he has gathered....just like I said before http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Airborne radars in WWII were generally of the highly directional nightfighter type or the ground -mapping or surface ship detecting type.

The AWACS concept, if anybody had come up with it then, was technologically out of reach until probably the late sixties. The sheer size and weight of a radar able to reach a 100 mile diameter in those times was well beyond the lifting power of any contemporary aircraft I'm aware of.

The closest to the AWACS in practice was a Group or Wing Leader, orbiting above the fight, and trying to direct his personnel to get the best strategic value for his fighters rather than actually getting into the fight himself. Blakeslee pioneered this technique, because he said he was such a poor shot, it was better if he got someone else to do the shooting.

Similarly, there was a person referred to as the "Master of Ceremonies" for the night bombing raids, who was in charge of the overall mission, who would orbit the target area and direct bomber traffic and possibly relay suspected or reported postions of enemy nightfighters to his own nightfighters.

In WWII, what you usually had was a plan, though, not someone in the air specifically directing you to the enemy. Once someone made contact, he'd holler for help over the radio.

Hence the quotes like "I've got forty FW-190s cornered over Dumer Lake!"
