I'm thinking of loosing my online virginity, but the constraint seem to be my modem. Will it work? What about lag, pings etc?

If you pro's advice in favor of it, I'll be happy to see you in the skys. Preferably in a Mig 3 with twin 12.7 UBS!

Cheers,
The Mig Pimp

(Are there any servers for the "1941" vintage pilots?)

I'm on modem myself, connected at 42kbs mostly via HL and I was never kick out from any session due to high pings (actully FB is working on 14.4kps). If skin DL is disabled, everything should be OK.

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

Absolutely, there's no reason why you shouldn't fly online with a 56 modem, I fly online with a 56 with no trouble. As Stalker pointed out, as long as skin downloads are turned off you should be fine.

S!

I run on dial up. I connect at 49.2kbps, and have skin download on, and have no problem, my ping can range from 190-300, depending on how fast the servers connection is. Good luck online, its a whole different world from flying against AI..

56k works surprising well in IL2. I used to use it, then went to cable cos I could got really annoyed at being switched off after every 2 hours (which always seemed to be in the middle of a coop).

Truth to tell, apart from the slightly less lag, it doesn`t make you a better pilot being on cable as opposed to 56k.

Yeah, infact... It's really a matter of a well built netcode.

The way it works is quite simple: all hits that are registered clientside (what you see) are sent to the server, and recorded as hits. So even if you lag, if you see a shot hit, it hit... thus, even 56k'ers can land a lot of hits.

Infact, you would probobly have the upper hand in a turnfight, as they would think you were missing / didn't have the angle, but infact you had hit them already, or had a good shot, etc.

I am REALLY surprised. My last online gaming experience was auto racing, and even with a 100 ping on a dialup I was laggy as all He...er, get-out.

What's the best way to play online, then? I checked out Ubi once for a different game, and not only was it confusing, but it didn't really work at all http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I usually connect at 24kbs and have pings of less than 400. Occasional lag but no real problems. I understand it is better if you join games with fewer players. Also some servers may
automatically bounce you, I believe. And you may occasionaly run into some rudeness because you are dial up. The name Red_Death comes to mind http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Hi,

I fly 56k with connection of 45.2k. Ping is, with UK servers, consistently around the 190-220 mark although it does occasionally go high when my g/f switches the kettle on http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif [seriously]

I find that I complain about lag the same time as the non-dial up players complain. The odd time, you get some pausing which can be annoying when you are about to fire, but you have to offset this with the cost (or bother) of getting broadband.

The worst time is maps with lots of AAA and/or buildings as things really begin to chug along for me.

But, for the most part, it's fine.

Cheers.
Norris

Absolutely. I use dial-up and have very few problems even with skin DL on, voice comms, 32 player games etc. My ping is usually between, say, 120 to the mid 300s. I rarely see my ping spike into the 500 or higher realm. Of course one thing that may play into my favor, as I understand it, may be the fact that I am relatively close to a major metropolitan area. So such connections are pretty good infrastructurally speaking. But you should definately do it. Once you do, offline will never be good enough for you again.

I was on 56k when i started and it is playable but you will lose or feel like you've lost some FPS and have jerks and pauses every now and then..

Dont get all cocky because you aint getting shot down much. Once played against someone who lagged like the dickens and thought he was playing really well. When actually he was just to dam hard to shoot down because of his lag issues.
