There has been many a whining thread about the flight models, damage models and the like in this forum. Some of it is in my opinion completely justified, others times its. Well i dont really care.

But I have yet to see a discussion about one of the facts that annoy me more than anything. SOUND !!!

We often talk about realism, if there is one area where realism is completely out the window then its external engine sound. Sure I have been saved by this thing many a time myself. But its definitely not realistic. Hmm wonder how many have been saved by external engine sound when I creep up their 6 oclock. I want the sound of my engine, hits on my aircraft and perhaps ground explosion to reach my ears (atmosphere). But I definitely dont want to hear the engine of the guy behind me. Even if it will mean I get bounced a lot more.

In short I want an option to turn of external engine sound. Flying a full real server turn down the throttle. Hmm I can hear a 109 over here. Turn look, sure there it is. This is so wrong. Please at least make it an option so that we can turn of external engine sound.

Ohh pretty please with sugar on top http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

ok, i apologise, with all this troll fever here lately...http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif
I don't think there are any reason to complaine about the sound in the game.... did you heard (in RL) a prop-driven plane ? I think is is normal to hear the sound of an engine at a certain distance as long as the loudness of it's engine is higher then the one of your enviroment...

I doubt anything more will be done about FB and I still cant find any sim that would compare with it overall.
Personally I like cool sounds but I have no problem with the sounds in FB.
Perhaps it will be very different in BoB, but I hope the soundfiles dont get too large because they can eat framerates very well as graphics do.

Im actually hoping for less sound F19_Ob... but i'm not expecting anything. So i dont see why it should eat more framerate.

I was in a Piper a few weeks ago and you cant hear Jack. I could brely hear the instructor let alone another plane creeping up to shoot me down.... however from what I have read the guns were loud as all get out. Especially on the P-47s.. Obverall Imm ok with the sound. I dont have any major complaints anymore.

That is my point Von_zero... when you sit in a plane you dont hear other planes, near or far. The sound of your plane exceeds anything you get from the environment.

oh sorry jada, I may have confused posts a bit.

Strange about the sound though.
I cant hear any plane on my six if I haven't idled engine completely.

---------------------------

The soundfile size have had a great impact on performance on all my earlier sims and by reducing the size I got a smoother game.
I used to tweak the old sims CFS1 and similar. The sound difference wasnt all that big in the end but it sure affected gameplay, especially with many planes in the air, firing and flak.
I could increase the number of planes in missions due to reducing sound alone.

Guess its more noticeable on low end systems.

Oki F19_Ob, Well i hear them pretty good when they get close to me. Like say 200 meters or so. My biggest worry tho is why i can hear a plane 2-3 km away, when i idle my engine. Im not saying its loud but you can definatly use it to locate planes. If you turn sound up really high in FB you get what i would call an unrealistic advantage. You hear planes near you. Not so in a real plane.

Funny, I can only just make them out when they are right on top off me. What version are you playing?

They did reduce external sounds a few patches ago but quickly brought the level back to where it is now. It's an immersion thing and I guess the majority feel the environment seems more "alive" and less sterile when you can hear it. I agree.

FB might sound a bit better I guess then if we all have huge PA systems with massive base amps instead of PC speakers and heaphones!http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

While I'd prefer it if the Spitfire didn't sound like a lawn mower I can live with it. Hopefully BoB will have good sound and the Merlin will sound allot more like its real life counterpart.

I like the sounds, for the most part.

That is, offline and flying unpatched AEP.

After experiencing a ride in the co-pilots seat in a twin engined Beech, it appears that the in game sounds for twin engined planes are not nearly as loud as real life. While the passengers in the rear of the Beech were OK, it was necessary to wear ear protection when sitting along side the big radial engines.

However, also bear in mind that the sounds of large bomber flights were heard long before the planes could be seen.

Few people would care to suffer the incredibly loud actual sounds, any more than they would like to fly for hours or days with no action in the sky, so we settle for compromise.

For a real sweet sound, fly an IAR-80 or 81 in an offline Romanian mission and soak up the deep bass rumbling when you ease into close formation. If you're a noob, an easy way to do this is to let Autopilot put you in the formation.

Incidentally as an added bonus this is an easy plane to fly in formation. An IAR-80 can keep up with the Artificial Idiots cruising at 290 kph and at very low throttle settings, somewhere around 35% if I remember correctly. Higher throttle settings are required for an IAR-81 with a bomb load.

In a recent offline mission, the AI in IAR-81's throttled back and flew at the same speed as the transport planes when moving to a new base, much more fun than the constant circling on many missions.

One more cool detail... the IAR-80 has brakes that are unusual, a squeeze lever on the joystick that moves when you apply brakes. (I see the toe brakes move on some planes now too!)

This game rocks!

Dunc

PS: That ride in the twin Beech was on a fly in fishing trip to Canada. One of the other planes used on that trip was Beaver serial number three, the oldest Beaver still flying.

I fly the 2.04 version Petter. Didnt know that it was reduced in earlier versions - Slammin. Forgot to mention that its a great game even if its not "perfect".
