Other than FB I like:

-Battlefield: 1942 (revolutionary and still growing)
-Rise of Nations (unbelievable strategy game)
-Vietcong (single player game most immersive game ever IMHO)

I would like to know if Blitzkrieg is any good if anyone has tried it, and briefly what are its good and bad points.
Thanks.

Vietcong is one of the best FPS I´ve ever played...
Otherwise, FS 2002/2004, Splinter Cell, BF 1942, and, of course, Falcon 4.

dunno if blitzkreig is any good. if it was made by the guys who made sudden strike i would not get it. CDV software has 0 support for players, doesn't listen to anyone and Sudden Strike was unplayable without 3rd party mods. Btw they manage to use the same game engine for 4 years now in 5 different games lol

never played it - i probably would never see the light of day if i did /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

--Vietcong (single player game most immersive game ever IMHO)

one of my two mates into pc games ALWAYS goes on about this game - so i figure it must be good - trouble is i'm such a stickler for WWII games at the minute /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

i would add RTCW - still an excellent FPS if you don't mind the fantasy element.
i did also enjoy MOHAA immensly - very immersive and -Excellent music - however both of these games are now a bit dated.

IL2 and Medieval Total War(with expansion or not) are the best games out there.Of the many i have on my HD.. i consider these masterpieces.

MTW is turn-based strategy.
For FPS,yes Vietcong is very imersive.Americas Army is free(you cant lose)
Role playing Morrowind.Honorable metion for Arx Fatalis.
Auto.. i like Race Car Driver by Codemasters.
Ive tried them all,i test several games a week.

Blitzkrieg is a great game, just depends on person who plays it. if you liked sudden strike 1 or 2, then you will love blitzkrieg. i think of it like what sudden strike 2 should have been. Good Points: great strategy game. good graphics(need i think 44.67 to fun on fx cards), just fun overall. Bad points: the ai could be alot better(example, u spot a tank with some of ur infantry, so u get ur artillery to fire, i know if i was in the tank i would move, the computer regardless of difficulty will just chill and wait to die) and i would really like to have a skirmish mode, not like command and conquer, but something along those lines. i seriously think the ai is one of this games biggest downfalls.

Oh and for the tread, these are the game i have installed:

Metal of Honor, Spearhead(great games, even today)Sim City 4, Vietcong, and of course FB.

oh yea and gershy just reminded me, cdv does make blitzkrieg. this is another bad point. they kinda put the game out and just forget about it. i remember ss2 was not a great game. but with the help of mods, it got a little better. i think blitzkrieg is better than the ss series, but same support /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif .

Operation: Flashpoint with Resistance expansion is a great game. The graphics is already slightly outdated (app. 2 year old engine), but the gameplay and immersion are excellent!

It's much better than Vietcong, which in my personal opinion is far from being perfect. Its engine (designed for classical FPS) and the character of the game (tries to be more realistic simulation) do not fit together.

I must have tried every single combat flight sim for the PC and IL-2 and FB are hands down the best, in every regard. However there is one other game I play nowadays, and that is EVE-Online. I'm actually astonished that it hasn't come up in this thread yet. It's a great space-trade-combat mmorpg that'll keep you hooked for a very very long time (or send you running in disgust efter 5 minutes). The downside to this game is that you need to spend alot of time whith it, and also it has a twelve buck monthly fee. But it's great fun and if you ever played Elite back in the good ol' days you'll dig it the most!

crikey 'Elite' eh - what a game
i don't know what version you had - probably the spectrum one - mine was the original BBC one - well it was for Acorn 'Electron' hehe -

god i used to LOVE that game used to play it for hours- i guess it was kind of a sim in a way - my main strategy was trading in narcotics buying and selling at the same planet - Onrira (still remember it to this day !)- very unstable market - you could buy 35 tons for 35 credits hyperspace out and then back and sell them for 3,500 credits hehe - never got to elite though - only deadly.
always used to see my friends with their atari/spectrum versions - which had things like miltary lasers and ambushs by those thingy aliens in hyperspace that were WELL hard - god what were they called ??- thargons i think hehe

still think a remake nowadays could be an incredible game - i'll have to check this EVE thingy out /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I don't know about my game of the decade. The Total War series, the Civilisation series, Flashpoint and the Simcity series are some of the best games ever made IMO. Medal of Honor (they forgot the u in honour /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif !) Allied Assault is very good, as well as Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin. Blitzkrieg is an excellent game. The graphics are great, the AI is actually quite good, and unlike in the C&C games (overhyped pieces of rubbish IMO) you can't win with a tank rush. I would really recommend Blitzkrieg. It has three campaigns, with battles ranging from Italy, North Africa, Norway and Normandy to Poland, Stalingrad, Kursk and Leningrad. Be forwarned, each area has three random battles (which can be a bit repetitive) and one real historical battle- so do not expect to fight in each area for too long. Also Poland and Norway (as well as Finland) are all tutorials. Even so, the campaigns are very long and have excellent gameplay. The units are also great. Air support is very good. You can call in Sturmoviks, Me109s, B24s and 25s, TB3s, Pe8s, U2 reconnaisance planes, Spitfires and a massive list of other planes. It does involve some patience, trial and error and frustration, but it really is overall an excellent game. Also the CDV support has not been too bad, with the release of a patch within around two months of the game's release, and there are quite a few fansites with mods in progress. Personally I would truly recommend this game .

To avoid the frustration of misfortune,
That, in this world, is happiness.

For WWII Tactical, the two Combat Mission games from Battlefront.com. Excellent games, excellent support, excellent rabid community-just like this one.

They are the only games I know of with the same painstaking modeling that FB has. Very detailed and features just about every tank you can think of

I am a bit surprised that more players are not aware of these two gems.

For Stragetic games that feel like old boardgames, I recommend the Panzer Campaigns series from HPS Simulations. Beautiful maps, excellent design that is well supported and constantly updated by the developers, with about ten campaigns in print now. My favorites are Smolensk 41 and Bulge 44, but there are campaigns to suit just about anybody.

Another recent gem is Gary Grigsby's "Uncommon Valor". (Matrix Games)A beautifully detailed game simulating the campaign in the South Pacific from 1942-43. Once again it has the flavor of an old boardgame but with lots more detail and chrome. Very addictive if you love Naval and Carrier stuff.

Note! All three companies do not sell their games through retail outlets. They are only available on line through the developers. Funny how sometimes the best supported games are no longer sold retail. I find that most big companies do not support their war games well as they are never big enough sellers. These smaller companies that make wargames only, support them til the death. I think that FB and IL2 have decent support, but it still not as good as the these three other companies.

Vietcong is very good. Also, GTA 3 and GTA: Vice City are extremely fun games, and Mafia has the best and most immersive story I've ever seen in a game.

For strategy, the Commandos series is great. Also, you might want to try Rise of Nations.

Don't know what's so great or realistic about player movement in the game. It looks OK, but nothing out of the ordinary for any shooter.
Also, it hardly has the most realistic water effect in a FPS, and surely isn't the first to have it (eg: NOLF2 was out much earlier and has much better water effects and GFX overall).
Mind you, I enjoyed BHD. It's great for blowing stuff up and is a generally well-paced shooter, but I wouldn't call it groundbreaking in any respect.

Uh BF1942, NEVER.. i hate that crap /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

For WW2 war gaming: CMBB: Barbarossa to Berlin

Simulation: IL-2/IL-2: FB

War gaming: Operation Flashpoint (+ Resistance)

Stratetic ww2: Sudden Strike-series (with realism mods+ Blitzkrieg/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Shoot'em all: BF1942, MOHAA (though I don't like this type of games anymore.. )

a few people said civilization 3, but i like sid's alpha centauri much better. it's got some bad points, but it's good if you want a civ clone except with all new technologies, environments, and secret projects. also, you don't have to stick with the default units; you can design your own with new technologies you discover. also i like the a.i. diplomacy mucccchhh better than civ 3. well you might be able to find the demo so i would check it out if i were you.

Nice to see so many appreciate Vietcong, but I disagree that the character tries to be realistic but the engine is not. You have to use cover and team tactics, there is nothing quake about it. This game requires stealth like the "Thief" series did (Aaahh, what a game), with sound being very important. You have to think your way through the game (flanking under cover works great), and the AI reacts very realistically.

Oh, and I agree, I finished all the Baldurs Gate games. Personally I liked Icewindale games much better. Still play Neverwinter Nights and the expansion.

Funny, now I am more confused about Blitzkrieg than ever. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I thought I looked for a demo and couldn't find one. I'll look again.

A couple advocates more medieval total war, I'll have to check that out along with Barbarossa to Berlin.

As far as Age of Mythology, it is a very good game but for some reason it got old fast for me, not much replay value. And when Rise of Nations came out I was blown away, especially considering the lack of hype surrounding it.

Cheers

Shogun:Total War started teh Total War series. Revolutionary, groundbreaking stuff. Especially for when it came out. Just a beautiful game finally followed by M:TW.

It came out in June of 2000 and was just miles ahead of it's time. The first game to have TWO games, in the sense that you get to play a great, stand alone turn based stratagy game, and have to fight the battles out in sim style with a totally different game engine

close combat 1,2,3 ... got it

CM:BB... want it, but cant buy at comp. store

vietcong... played the demo, thought it was atmospheric, but unrealistic in parts. If I fire a M16 into someones face at close range, they shouldn't be calling out for a medic in my opinion.
no-one recommended two of the best strategy games... Hearts of Iron and Europa universalis.. both great!

I'd like to try that space sim that is supposedly better than elite.. one of my fav games.

no recommendations for FS2004 either.. interesting.

as for best game of all time... I would have to say hands down.. X-Com: UFO Defence, and IL2:FB goes without saying

I have Blitzkrieg and don't get it.. it is a very poor version of Sudden Strike which I liked very much.. it seems that in stead of making it better they made it worse.

Thats MHO anyway.

Battlefield 1942 is the best game out there for online play. It is weaker as a single-player. With the expansion packs, multiple free mods available, it is the best of its kind.

However, I must tell you a story. I played BF42 a lot and got to be very good at it. I would get on the computer with no intentions of playing and find myself battling hours later. Countless months of preoccupation with this game and about zero productivity in the rest of my life (well, that's an exaggeration, but you get the point). One day I looked up and noticed I was almost late leaving to work after getting absorbed in kicking the opponent's butt in a match... again. This was beginning to be a frequent occurance. I then took the Road-to-Rome CD out of the drive and broke it. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif I was addicted and needed intervention. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. Breaking the damn disk is a final solution! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Plus, my fiance would have broken it herself. I wanted to spare her the shame of destroying my belongings. She actually said, "I hope I don't break that f*ing game when we get married." /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Free at last! Well, then, I buy this freaking game last week. I am once again hooked. It's a vicious cycle, I tell you! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

AHA! I knew there had to be another EVE player in this forum! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Great game and I would highly recomend it. Also, I'm suprised not many people have mentioned Homeworld. That was epic when it came out. The sequal (Homeworld 2) is coming on the 26th and looks pretty spiffy.

I'd also recomend Rise of Nations (like everyone else) and the upcoming Rome Total war, based purely on the previews.

If I had money to burn I would first get a nice HOTAS set-up, rudder pedals, and Track IR to make the IL2 FB experience more submersive. I would probably build my own chair (not as fancy as some guys make them on here) just to have everything in the right location. I plan on doing this anyway around Christmas time since I don't even have an interest in other games right now.

Ok, here goes (for ease I have sub-divided games into sections):

Combat Flight Simulation: IL-2 FB (Simply the best flight simulator ever!)

Tactical/Strategic Warfare Simulator: Medieval Total War. Many have mentioned this game, and so will I. It really is remarkable in every way. Set during the middle-ages you lead your faction (eg. French, Holy Roman Empire, British, Byzantines, etc) in a struggle for power. You can manage almost all areas of your empire and expand your province. You plan your strategy in turn-based. However, the real fun comes in the massive set-piece battles, which can involve thousands of troups. For a game that simulates true war, with realistic numbers of combatant, this is the perfect game. When Rome: Total War comes out, though, it will simply blow all other strategy games away (keep an eye out for it).

First Person Shooter: Vietcong, Rainbow 6 II, Medal of Honour.

Others: GTA Vice City, Mafia, WarCraft III... (to many to list meaningfully, lol).

that reminds me of a joke...

how can you tell the difference between a service station attendant (gas station for USA readers) and a porn star?

A: after filling up with fuel, the porn star takes out the nozzle and sprays fuel all over the windscreen of his car.

Homeworld 2!?!?! [rushes off to the shops]

Homeworld was awesome when I got it. Really good. And the whole intro sequence with Adaggio for strings playing...wow.

Someone mentioned the lack of recommendations about Flightsim 2004. Well, I read some others comments about it and (against my better judgement) bought it...first time I've ever bought a MS flight sim...also the last.

In fairness, if you want to learn to navigate, use GPS and all the terminology, this is an excellent aid. But as far as eye candy and so on, ewwww. FMs seem good, but I'm still not overly convinced so far.

If you are interested in a submarine game try Sub Command. It's quite an old game 2001 and they sell it for less than 15 bucks i think.

Holy! Prophets exist to this day! Thanks God to that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
