TrackIR is for simmers who can't discern things like stuttering very well.

Make sure that you're in enhanced mode and that the receiver is getting a good signal before getting rid of it.

I had serious problems with mine at first but it turned out to be my fault, not the equipment.

There should be a FAQ for this somewhere.

a) Don't be so quick to claim it doesn't work. I thought that, as have others, and it just takes some patience. It's not going to work for you "out of the box" as everyone's setup is different. When it works, it's fantastic. Telling everyone who loves this device how crap it is (like RBJ) just makes you sound kinda silly.

b) Set up a reflector cluster of more than one dot. Use a hat, use a headset microphone boom, using something where you can mount dots permanently. I have a four dot "+" arrangement, it works beautifully from any distance 30cm to greater than a metre. Make sure if the surface is curved that dots are visible to the detector at any angle.

c) Play with the placement of the detector. I have mine under and in front of my flat panel looking slightly up at my microphone boom. Usually from a distance of about 60-70cm.

d) If you wear glasses or have an unusually shiny forehead, don't play when the sun is in your face as it confuses the detector. I can't imagine that would be comfortable anyway.

e) Download one of the many good combat profiles for TrackIR people have posted, this'll save you fiddling about with settings. I won't go into settings here.

f) Use the naturalpoint IL2 forums to ask for the above or with any other query.

g) You'll feel stupid whining about it if you finally put in the effort to get working and realise just how good it is, but it's worth feeling stupid for.

Good luck,

SSS

What SSS said, and particularly:

1. Make sure you have downloaded the latest drivers.

2. Use more than one dot (I use five).

These two things transformed mine from a choppy, scratchy, jerky horror into a really useful piece of kit.

Regards,

RocketDog.

EDIT - send me an email address in a PM and I'll post you a copy of the profile I use.

Mine works perfectly,NO stuttering at all.Check in tracking screen if there is anything behind you that is being tracked.I am using 3 dots, sitting about 2 feet away from my monitor.Send it back if you dont like it,I can't play without it now.Best thing I ever bought for my sim adventures.

Yeah, what they said. I had to add more dots, and it does take a while to tweak, but it does work fine for me /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Stick with it, chap.

RBJ - another helpful post, eh?

Thx for the Tips, Its working much smoother and quicker now after more dots placed and the background checked.

But the lower half of the Y axis doesn't move below -10 in the Motion menu, the Tracking menu seems fine. Any way to program the Motion setting and save it?

why don't you post this at naturalpoint - this has no reason being here.

this isn't trackir forum !

1. Make sure on a tracking screen you always see one yellow "spot" in green square. If not - adjust the placement and viewing angle of TrackIR unit.
2. Disable aspect ratio filter. Actually both filters.
3. If you are having problem creating you own profile - drop me a PM, I will sent you mine. Most important - have generous "Dead Zone" area and smooth transition to the tracking area outside of "DeadZone.
5. Mount those dots NOT on a flat surface, but on a slightly conical surface, so at list one dot is still facing TrackIR unit when you turn your head to a side. If needed I will sent a pic. of how I set it up.
6. Do not forget to switch to Enhanced Mode every time you boot your PC. By default it will be in MouseView Mode.

You are going to love it.

Bogun,

Latest drivers have a "remember the mode" checkbox so this isn't a problem anymore...

This is important. I put the dots on a bent bit of card (from above it looks like a shallow V with the point towards the sensor) so that as I look from side to side it doesn't get foreshortened and reduce the signal.

It still sometimes loses the signal a bit when I try and look straight down, but the only time I really need to do that is when I'm checking to make sure I haven't left my sandwiches on the seat as I bail out.

Persevere!

RocketDog.

I mounted mine on conical cork with the sharp point cut off - one dot is mounted there, facing directly TrackIR unit, and whole cork is wrapped in reflective material on all the sides.

I seat about 2 feet from the monitor and never have problems with tracking.
If you seat farther - try making bigger reflective gadget.

I remember reading that Natural Point was going to introduce active IR source (not uni-directional like on remote controls, but emitting IR in all direction). That would be the end of all of our problems. I am sure, someone already assembled something like it from RadioShack parts.

I printed a page holder to foggy black and placed 5 dots horizontally on the holder, then clipped it to a hat.

The holder surface has no curve, but the horizontal placement of 5 dots allow more surface to be captured when I turn my head.

I'm having a hard time using TrackIR in a dogfight, but that's usually just spastic fingers panicking (I have it turn on with one of my throttle controller buttons, then I have it center view when I release it). I won't say I'm really used to it yet, but I've noticed I don't even want to fool with the HAT switch any more. TrackIR just feels more natual. As for the dots, I got tired of trying to make them work, so I went high-tech. I turned off the IR in the device and mounted an LED to my headset. An IR LED worked the best (higher tracking angles than even the dots), but it blew out quickly, so I must have messed up the resistance value you have to put in parallel). I just use a visible light LED now.

As far as being jittery, it has always been because I had forgotten to turn out all the lights. I stuck a small "stick" lamp under my computer desktop so I can see the keyboard).

I also had to use full "smoothing" though I didn't like the small delay it causes at first.

Give it some time, and tech support for the thing is excellent.

Yawn. Return the thing, quit whining.

You are both in the minority. Sorry the difficulty level was such that it overwhelmed you.
FB'ers number in the hundreds more each day using trackIR.
pfffffft, this is similar to whining about flying with a keyboard

By the way, it doesnt matter what color your balls are if you put them in the right place /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Other wise they could glow and shoot sparks, you'd never find them if you dont know what you're doing
