I have this setup here which I got for $196 after rebates...and I think it's great. When each of these products dies I intend to replace them with the same products unless something better isout by then.... I already have my spare MSFFB stick so the fact that Sidewinder is out of the business is moot.

I've a Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2 Pro SHOCk which is a fancy name for a good no-force feedback joystick. I've also got the CH Rudder pedals which are really great. Next on my purchase list is the CH Throttle quadrant when it's out and when I can save up enough for it.

For the 40 or 50 odd bucks I payed 3 years ago, the MS Sidewinder Presision 2 is still a good, cheep stick. I also own a Saitek Cybord Gold or something like that.

I've got what bearcat has except for the M$ FFB. I also use a Nostromo Speed Pad, but that's mostly for LOMAC

Me too!

I also have that Nostromo thing which is very ergonomic. What that has to do with anything, I havent a clue. But it's great if you need an extra trim wheel or if you dont wanna be searching for keys on the keyboard. It dont ever use it, but I am sure glad I have it. It also sounds like something Sigourney Weaver might use which makes it all the more intriguing...

Stock out of the box X45 and happy with it (though I would smile gleefully at the person who donates a set of CH Pro USB pedals to my kit http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ).

I have a Saitek Cyborg 3D, USB joystick. It's the best, had it for 3 years and it still works great. Can be adjusted to suit the size and use of your left or right hand. It also has a support at the bottom of the stick for your hand so you do not suffer fatigue with long period of play.

i've got the ms sidewinder and the nostromo n52 keypad. really satisfied with the keypad, keeps me from looking at the keyboard (keep those eyes forward son!)

and i've got the sidewinder set up so i use the throttle with my thumb and flaps up/down with my index and middle fingers. works like a charm in those furballs! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Hi guys!

One of my mates has the HOTAS Cougar set and swears by it, but it did cost him $600.00 Australian. Much as I admire his choice, I'm as tight as a duck's arse under water so I was looking for something cheap.

My most recent purchase was a Thrustmaster 'Top Gun Afterburner II' (the one without force feedback) and I paid $99.00 Aust. I think that's about $55.00 US (last time I looked at the exchange rates, which was some time ago).

It lacks rudder pedals, but you do get a choice of 'stick twist' or a large rocker on the throttle lever for rudder function. Myself, I go with the rocker. The Stick and throttle can be joined or split, so i split 'em.

The rig has performed well so far, is comfortable and easy to use. Perhaps my only criticism is the postioning of the No.3 button on the joystick, which I find can be accidentally triggered by my index finger if I'm not careful.

Durability is yet to be determined, but I've been using it for nearly a year and no probs so far.

I also have a Nostromo SpeedPad N50 and a n45 Gamepad that my son uses. Both are excellent and help with the variety of games played in our household.

Hope this could be helpful to anyone else who might be on a tight budget!

Best regards to all,

I don't use my Cougar to its full potential by any means, but I did program it myself and I essentially never have to touch the keyboard. I have no complaints about my CH Pro pedals either. Add TrackIR and I am one very spoiled flight simmer...

I also guess I'll never find out whether force feedback would be cool. Oh well.

I use the full CH Products rig, and leave the Sidewinder Precision 2, the Logitech Force 3D and Freedom sticks in their boxes for guests. I'm currently kicking around the idea of adding the Yoke as a button/slider bay. It'll save me some $ over the new throttle rig they're working on...

cheers

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

When you get HOTAS and rudder like CH's, you'll find it didn't suit you. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe...
But the stick is okay for me - just a rookie...

I was thinking about the Afterburner II (Thrustmaster), but then got the Sidewinder for ten bucks (ebay).

Oops, just kidding. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I got two SW precision2 HOTAS(?) setup, and remodeled Logitech Racing Wheel's pedal for rudder use. I don't like expensive tools like Cougar, either. So don't get me wrong. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I used to have a Saitek Cyborg Gold 3D. I couldn't imagine spending 80 bucks US for a HOTAS.

When I bought FB, I was pretty shocked. I was a good enough IL*2 driver, but in FB I was getting smoked by AI set at rookie left and right. And then a microswitch went on a 3 month old joystick. I talked to a former employee of Saitek on a game forum and he indicated that the Cyborg Gold 3D was known for switches wearing out. Not a knock on the stick, but that's what he said.
Now I've been interested in WWII aviation since I was about 5. I was not going to let an obviously superior sim like FB sit on the shelf because I didn't have a stick. I went looking for another stick, and all I could find that wasn't a Cyborg was an X45. I was leery of it (hey, don't they use the same microswitches?!) but I never could recall anyone complaining about the quality of the product, so I bought one.

Hokey smokes Bullwinkle! That HOTAS made all the difference in the world playing FB. Suddenly, I could fly again. I wasn't getting shot down every time I met an enemy. I could perform aerobatics, too, for a change. I never felt comfortabke using the twist grip on the Cyborg stick, especially to the right. Now, suddenly, I can control rudder inputs precisley and I think that was what the big change was. I'd like to get pedals, but honestly I can't find anything to complain about on my X45 with it's rudder rocker. Infinitely better than a twist grip. I guess you need sophisticated hardware all around for a sophisticated sim like FB. I wouldn't recommend anything less than a HOTAS, if you can scrape up the dough.
