Fellow Jugmen, there is a Poll/thread currently going in Oleg's Ready Room. We are trying to get the roll rate of the P47/D27 corrected once and for all. It is obviously an error in the translation of documents by the 1C crew.

There is no reason the D27 should roll like an IL2 while the D10/22 are fine. Vote "TOO SLOW", post your proof of the D27's roll rate, or simply bump it often.

See you at 12,000ft ~ http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I could say the same about the Spitfire, but that would be trolling. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Edit: I show up in Spit threads knocking it for being ugly, so I'm not pissed or anything. It's all good fun. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

How do you know I like the Spit? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Actually I'm torn between P-51 and Spit. Thank Oleg we can have both!

Thank Oleg, indeed. I just hope we can at least get the P-47N flyable. The P-47M would be a monster. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif People might even start calling it a "Noob" plane. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif Heaven forbid. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

About the P-47M...

As far as I understand it was a lightweight sprinter, V-1 interceptor. Armed with six guns instead of eight. Same engine as P-47N, but much lighter.

Am I correct?

http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~wingman/p47.html

This site gives an overview of production P-47s. As you can see, the M was actually a bit heavier empty, but it was not intended to carry bombs and such, hence the reduced max load. Once the V1 threat was over, they were modified with the bomb pylons on the wings, and belly shackles, I believe.

The M was actually designed a year before the V-1's were deployed. There apparently was simply no need for it until the British started looking for a fast interceptor with heavy armament. The funny thing is, the P-47D's in service at the time were capable of catching V1's, as were Tempests, Spitfires and some other British designs.

I see some sources saying that the P-47 carried 6 to 8 guns, but I've only ever seen pics and read stories about ones with 8. On a plane as big, heavy, fast and powerful as the Jug, reducing the armament to 6 wouldn't make much of a difference, imo. The XP-47J seems to have had 6 guns in mind, but the P-47M seems to have had 8, as near as I can tell.

This site has some info about the XP-47J/P-47M development. Enjoy!

Hmmm... The first site states that the M was some 350 kg lighter than the N, empty, and more than 3000 kg when fully loaded.

Anyway, thanks for the links!

This is IL-2 forum at its best, when memebers provide other memebers with information they were not aware of!

Ah, sorry, misread your question. I was comparing the P-47M's weight to the P-47D models. It was developed before the P-47N, and was slightly heavier than it's contemporary D model siblings. It was a rocket compared to any other prop fighter in service at the time, with an official top speed of 470mph. Common overboosting techniques could raise that by 15 to 20 mph. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif And I just noticed, but the first site seems to have the R-2800C series engine hp wrong. It should be around 2800hp, instead of 2535hp. 2535hp is the rating for late model D series, like the P-47D-35-RA. Both the M and N had the R-2800-57, 2800hp engine.
