im new here, and couldn't find something on this, so here goes
i was woundering if you could pilot your sub within close range to an iceberg, go to periscope depth, and be passed off as part of the iceberg when enemies ping you. there would be nothing i would like more than launching a salvo of fish at an unsuspecting battleship while being right next to an iceberg, and the enemy thinking i was the iceberg

In theory I guess that you could do that, although I don't know if ice and metal produce different echos.
If the ranges between the escort and the submarine and the escort and the iceberg are too different (ie you are not close enough to the iceberg) then it could still spot

In practice though I would want to stay away from icebergs.
Only 10% sticks out of the water and there is no way of knowing it's underwater shape.
Colliding with it is not a good idea.

I also wonder how often this scenario would present itself.
Surface ships would avoid icebergs too and sticking with an iceberg would limit my mobility. (you'd have to lay dead in the water near the iceberg)

I can't say how this is modeled in the game.

I agree with Jeroen-79: in real life (and we want this to be a sim, not a game) you'll wreck yourself on the part of the iceberg you can't see long before you get close to the part you can. Also, because of the danger, even if you could park close to the iceberg you won't get a shot, because no surface ship is going to come close enough to the thing to be in either sonar or torpedo range; so I guess, yes, staying close to the ice will protect you from destroyers (and them from you).

Ah, but jeroen, if your avoiding a battleship, then it would be safest to line up with an iceberg. Then the ship will not go near you for the danger upon itself, and therefore not be able to spot you due to your proximity to the iceberg. Sometimes you need to take some risks to get away alive. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Let us not forget the biggest drawback, hiding beneath an iceberg will give everyone inside the boat the chills, causing a big drop in morale!

The iceberg is the least of your worries.

Why 'icebergs' are so dangerous is that they have large chunks break off i.e. size of a shipping container or car that can rip your hull apart but are either fully submerged or if partially submerged have so little above the water as to be easily missed.

These are what will get you, not the iceberg itself unless you drive like your Granny http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Both jeroen-79 & SailorSteve are right. At least in 'real life'.
But seeing what has been modelled, it doesn't seem to be that way. Seems to be a 'diamond' shape, with 2/5 above and 3/5 below. Not spread out at all. Notice how the sub practically touches(within meters)? Keeping station should be a problem too, but not here, since there will be no drift(currents aren't modelled).

Sounds like good mods to me! More 'real' things missing to be added.
Don't forget the pack ice. No surfacing allowed.

A new WW2 wonder weapon !!

I want this feature modeled, i want to be able to tow my own iceberg !! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think so you could use it as coverage, but will be so hard to found an iceberg situated so good enough to perform an attack..........

Best regards, Red.
