View Full Version : Farewell Redwulf__44

Redwulf__1
06-18-2004, 05:36 PM
Today I fullfill with sad heart my thoughest service to the Squadron and the Community:

Our comrade in arms, Donald P. Baldridge, Staffelcaptain 1 of JV 44 The Redwulf- Squadron, passed away at 17.06.2004, after losing his long battle with Myelofibrosis with Myeloid Metaphase.

Donald was member of this Squadron since early 2001. I recruited him and as time went by, we all have found a true friend. Not only for the games, also for real life. His kindness and humor was a addition for us all.
His loyality and friendship was outstanding, without any doubt. He was a feared Focke- Pilot in all Scenarios the Redwulf- Squadron had joined.

But as time went by we all have had to realisze his illness and his battle against it. He never was complaining, he was always thinking positive.

It was a tough, long battle for him. During the treatment, and following it's conclusion, Donald maintained an optimism until the visit before the last when a Redwulf Comrade saw him.

Tuesday night, Redwulf__60 visited Donald again. He was in great pain, and heavy sedation. He recognized his Comrade and the presents of the Redwulfs when he came in, and they spoke a little. He spoke of the Redwulfs and how much he enjoyed flying with the Squad. Even under these circumstances his thoughts were with his Squadron and his friends.

He reminded us: Always go up!

As the night wore on Donald fought harder and harder. The Redwulf Comrade stayed as late as he was able at DonaldÔ┬┤s bed, then he went home.

Early this morning, at 17.06.2004, Donald passed away. His Wife and relatives stayed at his bedside.

True to his motto, Donald never gave up in his fight, but finally the illness
took our friend away.

My thoughts, our thoughts are with Donald and his relatives. We condolence his Wife Carolyn and his realtives.

Now hes home and free. It is my believe that at one day we meet again....and we will fly again side by side, howling the song of the Redwulfs.

From today on, his callsign will be saved and wont give away anymore, his plane, his Focke Wulf D-9, white 44, will be placed into our base Ainring Scenery. Donald will be transfered into our Honorable Section of the Redwulf Website.

Thank you visitor to be here. You are honoring a great man and wonderfull person, a true friend and a real Redwulf...

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

High Flight
by John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

My heart goes out to his family and the entire Redwulf Squadron......

My first night on HL I ran into Redwulf_1 as I crashed over and over again on take off....he was kind enough to show me the ropes and get me on my way. I have flown on occasion with the Redwulfs and find them nothing short of skilled and honorable pilots.

My condolences to his family and his freinds. I never had the chance to fly with him. Not knowing this gentleman, I will quote a prayer;
"Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awake in mornings hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I did not die."

Once again I offer my condolences to his family and friends. ~S~ Redwulf__44 May gods speed bring peace and comfort to you and your family.

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep.
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

As Johnny underground.

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

Whenever a silly game can foster the friendships that are apparent in this situation, and provide an individual some joy in the face of illness, then it's true value can be clearly seen.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Farewell and Godspeed RedWulf__44. You will be sorely missed!

Redwulf_44,

I have not had the pleasure of knowing you but Godspeed and fair skies buddy and second star to the right and straight on till morning.

To the Redwulfs:

I have had the Pleasure of knowing all of you and have flow with you guys in battle. I am deeply saddened for your loss. A bit of comfort to you all is that when you lose a fellow pilot it makes you all stronger. It is always a pleasure to fly with and against you guys. Your squadron has the highest honor amongst along with many other squadrons in this realm. I am sure Redwulf_44 is smiling amonst all of you and riding shotgun on your wing. May he rest well in peace and I know that you all will meet again soon.

If you would like, The Virtual War Cinema would be pleased to make a tribute video for RW 44 if the squadron approves. I will be proud to produce the video with fitting music to compliment it. I have a few pieces of audio in mind for his tribute. Please contact me at boyington214@cox.net and I will be happy to make this a priority.

Again I am sorry for your loss and anytime you fellas want to fly with me and my squadron and be on comms with us I extend a warm invitation to you all.

My heart is heavy and I know what it is to lose a good friend like this.

With Respects and a snap Salute S!

I am new to this forum community, but I know the Redwulfs well. Though I must say I never had the honor of flying with or agienst this man, it will be an honor to fly with the RedWulfs any time and remember him. I know how it is to lose someone to an illness, he will not be forgotten, his fight was just and he as won his rest in heaven. May the Lord, His SOn, and the Hold Ghost watch over him.

Donald came to the Redwulf squad shortly after I did. I didn't teach Donald to fly but we all taught each other. That's the Redwulf spirit. We help one another, we share our insights and we enjoy a deep comraderie that is unimaginable for a bunch of guys scattered all over the world.

I have said it before, and it amazes me still that we all come from such diverse places with diverse thinking and we jump into our virutual cockpits and have become best of friends. We share triumphs and defeats. There is something to be said about sharing defeats. It makes a deeper bond. We are all competive persons among the Redwulfs and working to become better brings us closer together.

I found this short poem that sums up what we have shared with Donald the past few years. I'll miss him. But I will always remember the flights and fights.

HORRIDO DONALD!

The days that we have flown
By Timothy S. Bastian

You came to me,
like a frightened child,
and asked me how to fly.

I took your hand,
and led you up,
and showed you how and why.

We have looped and dove,
and rolled and spun,
and cut patterns from the sky.

And when we were done,
we'd had some fun,
and you learned how to fly.

Though you walk this Earth,
you've soared like an eagle,
seeing your shadow in the clouds.

You've done marvelous things,
since you've spread your wings,
and you've made your instructor proud.

And now that you have,
let go of my hand,
and set out on your own.

I hope that you,
will remember me,
and the days that we have flown.
