Guess what i would like to see!... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

On a serious note, what I am asking about is not stock 2048 textures - I understand this would take too much time + request too much from many computers. Rather, what I would like is the possible removal of the 1024 texture limit, so custom skins of higher (say 2048 x 2048) resolution can be used.

Offline, this could simply be used on the player's aircraft - which would considerably improve the visual quality of wings and such when looking from the cockpit.

Online, in order not to seize everyones computer, the textures could be filtered down to 1024 or, at worst simply restricted to this resolution, so that maybe only the player has to look at his own spangly high res skin.

Also, this would add significantly to the graphical shelf life of the sim. In a few years time when 256 & 512 MB graohics cards are standard, higher res tectures would be logical. Also, I think if onl used (if one wishes) on the player's aircraft, the one high res texture wouldn't make much of an impact on fps, certainly not on a reasonably contemporary system.

Also, it would be great, nay FANTASTIC to offer a significant graphical improvement over FB. This would not just from be a marketing strategy ("Significantly higher resolution possible plane textures than the legendary FB" on the box), but when in the cockpit in fb the wings, especially on twin engine aircraft, look pretty damn err... squary

The graphical quality of CFS2 can be significantly improved by replacing the stock textures with 1024 x 1024. Similarly, I understand that CFS3 (though a crappy game) can support 2048 x 2048 textures (will try this next http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif)

So to sumarise: The possability of using higher res textures could allow 1: An unprecedented level of detail for the aircraft, especially noticeable when in the cocpit (99% of the time).
2: A greatly extended shelf life offering new graphical treats for current & future simmers, and keeping ahead of the times
3: A whole new world of detail for the allready spectacular skinning community.

Anyway, I think thats enough to start a reasonable discssion, looking forward to a few responses.

Sorry, unfortunately the answer is no.

We did increase the ground vehicle texture size to 512x512 is that's of any condolence.

A well. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the fast response

just for interest, any chance of an explanation - is this imply something that would take too long to implement in fb's current engine?

Well first of all it would take too much time to implement, and then that would raise huge problems with custom skins in online play for those whose cards simply don't support that resolution for textures. Finally, it would be completely retarted for us to support 2048 texture but ship a product with all planes using 1024s - and of course developing new 2048 skins even for some of them would take even more of the time which we don't have.

hmmm, i guess i see your point.

however, in the interest of open debate, i have a few of my own... cfs2 and 3 support much higher res textures than came with the game. i'm not using these as shining examples of sims, but this at least is a nice feature.

online, could the texture size could be limited, or made so people can only see their own high res texture if they like to have one.

though i realise it is too late + time consuming to make 2048 skins for the release, it would really give new meat to the skinning community - and i think would still be a great selling point.

However, to be honest what i'm actually after really is not higher res textures for all, but simply a relaxing of the limit on texture sizes so the sim can continue to expand in the future. I don't mind if this isn't done for the initial release, its just with new sims (KOE for example) on their way, it would be great to allow this sim to remain competitive.

There is no separate offline/online code. To separate any part of the game to use different skins for online and offline play would such a giant cluster-you-know-what, you don't even want to think about it.

Ok, so we will get the PF with 1024x1024pix textures. But is there any chance that in later patch we will get oportunity to use 2048x2048 one ? Or we have to wait until the PF will be done using BoB engine ? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

About on-line play - we can always turn off the ability to download other pilots skins, and see the defaults http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif so I don't think that's a serious problem http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (when the deafault is 1024x1024)

S. All Gents!
In the old great sim "WWII Fighters" there were a great mods that include High Res wings templates like this one made by Hammerd...

Original WWII Fighters wing

I think he use a separate template only for the wings (in a result of a great cockpit view).
Is that possible in PF?

Saludos SG1_Costa.

Wow... now that's what I call a good looking wing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Unfortunately in FB engine what you see from the cockpit, and from the outside is the same texture (of course I'm talking about the wing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ). So without 2048x2048 pix. textures that kind of efect is impossible http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

That wing looks really nice, but I think AEP showed that you can get very close to that with 1024x1024. Look at the stock Hurri skins and the J8A cockpit. Both are done to the same standard as the example 2048. They suffer a bit for the lower resolution, but both are well above the average quality.

Let's get high-quality 1024s on everything, then talk about going to 2048.

For the current levels of detail...a nice 1024x768 skin is ample to create some awesome levels of detail. Maybe in the next generation of sims we'll see that limit blown sky high but there are practical limits and this is one of them.

I'm still from the old school...the fact that it even has textures in the first place still amazes me somedays http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

What amazeme (if I remember well) is that this High Res wing are 512x512 in two separate templates for each wing.

Well ok, I'm just like the way that planes look in LockOn with 2048x2048 textures http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
In FB I can't always do something the way I would like to - the writing or nose arts are to blurry.

And yea, I remember the old games, like "Ace" for the C64, where I was flying a triangle, shooting other triangles... and sometimes a scuares http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif crazy times http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Not that we'll see it in PF, but I'd rather see the ability for greater than 8bit bitmaps to be used, even at just 1024.
