Ah yes, the F-14. The slowest, slowest accelerating, slowest climbing and 2nd least manueverable modern fighter in the world. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

What's really sad is all those nasty things I just said about it are actually true http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif. Fortunately for F-14 drivers its got one hell of a radar and an ultra long range missle to make up for its lack of performance. I'm not sure why they would get rid of the F-14, its a pretty good interceptor which is of vital importance to an aircraft carrier.

Actually the Super Hornet has basically all of the same problems that the original has, they went a little nuts on the size and badda-bing, about the same and manueverability. Poor Tomcat...

problems, what problems http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif allz i know is u can unleash one mighty can of whoop a** with a super hornet, or even a normal hornet. If it can do the f-14s job and the ground attack role, y bother having 2 sets of spare parts on each carrier? it makes sense logistically, however u spell that

Heywoood,
LOL about the Huggybear. I wish the story was as good as that. Actually when I joined my first squadron, as a nugget, everyone in the squadron gave me a big bear hug- even as far up as the CAG. A couple of guys even patted me on the ***. It is tradition to screw with nuggets and to pick the callsign of the nugget. New pilots never get to pick their own callsign. Nobody has cool callsigns like in Top Gun. They started calling me Huggy and it just stuck.

As far as the Tomcat goes they will all be retired soon. The Phoenix missile is already bye-bye. The last tomcats are sparrow and aim-9 shooters only. Their radar tends to break a lot. When it does work- which is rare- it is supposedly a decent radar.

I have a thousand hours in hornets, both the legacy and the Rhino, and I can tell you it is all that and a bag of chips. I have a lot of respect for the Flanker, F-22, Vipers and Strike Eagle, but they have the damndest problem- they require a fixed runway. My airwing was the first in Afghanistan post 9/11. There was not a tactical air force jet to be seen.

Skychimp has a great idea. I have long salivated about the prospect of jumping on hyperlobby in my rhino and slaughtering all the props (or at least not getting my @ss kicked quite so much). Any hackers out there able to build me a "Final Countdown" cheat...?

Well, since we have a Go-229 and B-1 in AEP, this would fit right in . . .

Okay, US gets the f-14, but Japan gets Godzilla. After all, he defeated a bunch of US troops in WWII in Godzilla vs King Ghidora

Yeah, but you couldn't hurt him, you'd need an "Oxygen Destroyer" missle or something like that. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

From what I've read, the Tomcat is going away primarily because of maintenance. It's an old airframe, and takes two to three times the maintenance a Super Hornet does. And as Maj Death said, it's not the best jet as far as P/W ratio, acceleration, maneuverablitiy etc. That being said, my Squadron Weapons Officer and I were both humbled by an experienced Tomcat crew in a 2v1 (the pitter was a Commander, the nose-gunner a LtCmdr.) I don't think they ever got above 140 kts., but with a radar missile threat, could still point the nose at the guy extending for energy, keeping us both beaten down. Carried long enough, we could have just called a ground kill, but we both came away impressed. By contrast, I found the F-18C fairly easy prey, though the guys I usually fought were the Marines out of Iwakuni. Their primary mission was CAS, and they concentrated their training on that mission, not air-to-air.

The Super Hornet reminds me of the line from Hot Shots Part Deux "... you're the best of what's left." It's maintenance, range, payload and bring-back weight are better than the F/A-18C, and it's avionics are more modern. But it's P/W, acceleration, top end and maneuverablity are all worse. Not that any of that makes much difference these days... the only A/A threat I see on the horizon is the PRC, and we're not going to be shooting them down for a while (by which time we'll probably have the F-35 in several flavors and the F/A-22.)

Huggy's right about carrier aircraft though. P/W ratio and qMax doesn't mean a thing if the plane can't get to the fight. If both can make it to the same engagement though, I'll put my money on the Viper. Some of my instructors deployed to El Toro to do DACT with the Marine Hornets (yeah, I'm old.) One got wrapped up with a Hornet, 180 out and co-airspeed at 250 kts. The Hornet decided to separate, and unloaded in 'burner, only to be shot down. He got back and asked "How'd you do that? I thought I had enough angles on you to get away before you could get around." My IP just plugged in the HUD tape, which showed his IAS... 790 kts. (the Hornet - and Tomcat - are limited to 650 kts.) "Oh, that's how" he replied.

The Tomcat has turned into a good multi-mission platform in its twilight years, with LANTIRN and JDAM. The bottom line is that the Super Hornet can do the same thing, and cost a lot less to maintain (though its legs aren't quite as long.)
