I've given up trying to get FB to play nice with all these patches Iv'e fed it.

Gonna have to do a strait box to 1.11 looks like.

However I'd like some tips about exactly what folders I need to back up so I dont loose any saves, keymaps etc...

also I think someone said something about play 1.0 once first then patch? or maybe it was dont play just patch?

anyway I'd like some advice before i proceed

Thx in advance

What I do is create a directory on my backup drive called IL-2FB and then duplicate parts of the folder structure from the game installation directory. This way, you don't have to remember where anything goes, and you can just drag and drop the first-level subfolders (i.e. PaintSchemes) and everything will go where it's supposed to (after you keep telling it to overwrite same name files). I try to only copy files that I know are not part of the install or have been changed, to save time and space. Anyway, here's a list:

- \i18n\netmessages.properties (I edit the "Cheating has been detected!" messages here.)
- Any missions that you've downloaded, both single and multiplayer.
- Any skins (planes, pilots and regiments) you've downloaded.
- Any QMB missions you've saved. \Quicks
- Any tracks you want to keep. \Records
- Save the entire contents of the \Users directory to keep your configuration settings. You can do individual files, but the whole directory is easier.
- Backup your conf.ini in order to backup any tweaks as well as your joystick sensitivity settings. This should also capture your detail and sound settings (the ones accessible from within the game).

It's also a good idea to backup your skin cache (\PaintSchemes\NetCache) and mission cache (\Missions\Net\cache) directories as long as space isn't an issue.

I think the single player campaign stuff is also stored in the \Users folder, but I'm not certain about this. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in.

Just done a clean install after hard disk failure. Hadn't heard of the play once thing, so I just installed FB and patched straight to 1.11 (the big patch, not all the miscreants) without playing first. No problems apart from lousy sound but that was my own fault for not making a note of absolutely everything to do with audio and video.
A bit of experimenting and reading a couple of threads in the Tech forum, all is aok once more.
Cheers!

Hi,

I frequently use a tool called 'Beyond Compare' (Google for it) which does directory compares/copying/automated backup etc.

I actually use it for merging source code but it also the dog's knackers for checking CD burns (built in binary CRC check) etc..

I would suggest pointing it at your current FB folder and using it to copy the content to a backup folder.

You can then delete the original and re-install FB.

Afterwards, compare the directories and you can see which files have changed etc - particularly useful for resetting your keymapping, conf.ini etc

Then, of course, you can always delete the bits of your backup that you no longer need.

Cheers,
Norris.

Hi Leadfinger

The given list of folders is almost complete, you'll need also a backup of the "mission" folder, inside it there's a folder named campaign and inside that you'll find a folder for each one of your pilots with some important files like "status" wich specifies the date in the campaign and the planes available (friend and foe).

This is a key file when you want to "order" a new plane during a campaign /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif , after all the choices made before starting the campaign aren't always correct. I remember my first campaign when i had no idea of this plane choice then after 200 mission flying the bf109 and it's variants i managed to "order" a brand new FW /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Good flight to you !

Back up Users, Missions and Dgen for folders, and the Conf.ini file, that's all I do, works great. But also Paintschemes folder if you have skins in there that aren't
default ones.
