View Full Version : OT, but I need your help - FS2002 vs FS2004

Hello all!

I'm currently using FS2002, but since hearing about the upgraded weather and airports (runway and taxiway signs etc) in FS2004 I've been thinking about upgrading. I do need your help with a couple of things though.

1) Do you think the difference between FS2002 and FS2004 justifies buying the latter if I already own and enjoy FS2002? Any feedback on the weather, ATC, etc?

2) Could someone please post a screenshot of Karlstad airport in Sweden (ESOK) which is my local airport, so I can see if they upgraded it with signs etc. Even the biggest airport in Sweden lacks signs in FS2002, and I'm worried that the main focus in FS2004 might be on North America and the big international airports. So, any chance of a screenie or two? The signs would tip the scale so far in favor of FS2004 that I'd have to get it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks in advance, and I'd also appreciate any comparison between the two to help me decide.

this forum typically doesn't discuss MS products. check your page headers and links to make sure you're in the correct place

I know that xTHRUDx, hence the "OT". I only asked because most of us in here have a general interest in aviation and simulators. Since I haven't found an answer anywhere else regarding ESOK and I respect the opinion of the people here I decided to ask even though Ubi didn't publish it. Sheesh... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I am enjoying FS2004, but I skipped over 2002 so I cannot really comment on differences.
I "heard" of some people preferring 2002 over 2004 but for me 2004 -with some tweaks applied- is a nice Sim. ATC works fine, so does the weather system, but it's a system hog compared to 2002.
I'd venture that the airports are still the same, so Karlstad might still be lacking those signs.
Frankfurt doesn't look anything like in real life, but signs are there. I could fire FS2004 up and buzz aroudn Karlstad if you like, but I'll have to get on my own machinne first.
Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Morbid_Jester: I'd really appreciate it if you could do that. In FS2002 there's not a single sign anywhere at the airport... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I own both FS2002 and FS2004.. Once I got FS2004 i uninstalled 2002 and have never used it sinse.. It's true that 04 is more of a system hog.. to yield the same FPS you had in 02 you'll have to sacrafice.. until you figure out. like I just did.. that 20-25 fps is perfectly fine.. when you have everything maxed out.. it's a whole new world from when you try to get performance.. but it actually runs really good with full settings.. however in really bad storms with rain and lighting and all kinds of clouds... it can get a bit choppy.. unless you have some almighty 6ghz system with 3 video cards..

Morbid_Jester:
Thank you so much! The airport has received a slight "touch up", it still doesn't look exactly like the real thing, but it looks better in FS2004. Just small things make a huge difference, like the signs, new runway textures, etc. Looks like I might have to get it after all, and retire FS2002. Might be a st00pid question, but what's "My Traffic 2004"? I've always used the built-in-traffic, what's the difference?

That's a beautiful plane you've got, what model is it? Does it come with a virtual 'pit? I owe you a large cold one for this, just holler the next time you swing by my area! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No Problem..http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My traffic is a Payware addon that replaces the default fantasy airlines with real world ones, adds models, a/c textures and AI flightplans.

check www.mytraffic2004.com (http://www.mytraffic2004.com) for more details.

The Plane is the Aerocommander 680, a freeware plane I got from AVSIM.com, no VC, but a good FM, custom sounds (there is nothing like those twin engines growling http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), 4 liveries and has quickly become my favourite VFR/STOL ride.

yes definitely get 2004. it comes with a great set of default planes (many more than 2002) as well as many other enhancments. the greatest thing though was that i didnt even notice a difference in performance compared to 2002. in fact it almost seems like it runs better!

I had the same thing happen when to me. It does seem like 2004 runs better than 2002. Anyway-go 2004.

Thanks for the input guys! I really appreciate it. Now all we need is for someone to model an IL-2 for the FS series. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I have 2004 and love it.. I fly with all full up and have no problems.. I get about 35 fps in the sim.. I had 2002 and it was very good also.. but took it off because 2004 is alot better and has more to offer.
You would not go wrong by getting it..
