Was this ever a problem?? I was thinking that those P-51 escort missions to Germany were quite long, what happened when a pilot desperately needed to snap one off? Did they just go or was there some piece of technology to help out??

Well, first they made sure that they went just before take off (part of pilot's checklist...). Then, in flight if the need arose, they had a little container with a special neck to adapt to their anatomy...They would do it in there. Most cumbersom if you think of all the layers of clothes they had and a cramped cockpit...You don't want to be bounced at that moment, I'm telling you!!!!!!

That makes sense if we are dealing with that situation. What about needing to drop off a few friends at the pool though?? Must have smelt pretty damn bad in that cockpit.

Well since I fly full-real in FB, they must have done what I do, put the plane in a climb go to the head come back and your almost ready for some boom and zooming.

I always thought that's what Pitot tubes were for until I started really flying. I never told anybody...let's just keep it between us, K?

Well, its probably still similar to what happens today:

If you need to go for a "Number One", you open up your puke bag, jink with your clothing and privates, fill the bag, open the canopy and toss out the bag (hopefully over an unpopulated area). Many aircraft today are now equipped with "Pee-Tubes", which remedy the insecurities of spilling the bag. Don't know about any tubes in WW2 planes however.

If you need to go for a "Number Two", you are "Sh!te out of luck" and probably wish that you ported Pampers for that day.

Being a current chopper driver and former jet pilot, I now find both these endeavors have become so much easier, given the ability of a helicopter to land almost anywhere.

...A quote from a site concerning the lack of a relief tube in the TBM Avenger:
"This happened on a Carrier in the Pacific.We were a torpedo squadron and our executive officer was the only Annapolis graduate. We were all volunteers for the duration and six months (Navy Reserve) The executive officer was very military minded. A nice guy but he believed to be very straight. In the later productions of the TBM (Grumman Torpedo Bomber) there was no relief tube where the pilot relieved himelf. You always made sure you went to the bathroom (Head) before a hop. This executive officer was assigned a long Anti-Sub Patrol, about 4 to 5 hours. During the hop he had to go but no relief tube. He held it and held it until the hop was over. Coming in to land, he caught a landing wire that had a pretty strong tension. This through him against the seat belt and caused him to urinate all over himself. A fine example of a dignified Annapolis Graduate"

From what I have been told it was quite common for these tubes to freeze over and you were always forced to dump the contents in the floor.

Now I have to ask this, you think they made a different version for the ladies who ferried the planes from the factories to the bases or the Russian women who flew in combat? My guess is they didn't.

By first hand knowledge, i can attest that it is one of the most excruciating pains I have ever felt. 4 hours into a 6 hour patrol over burning forests with turbulence bouncing you up and down 300 feet ever few seconds, and having to hold onto a pis$...

I kid you not... that 182 was more than redlined in the engine and Vne department on the way home http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Didn't even taxi off the runway, just blasted to the end,cut the mixture , fell out of the plane and had a good couple of minutes of relief.

A bottle was added to the checklist for the next flight...
