I hope that pilot got some sort of commendation for making the attempt.

The famed "one engined B-17" ya gotta love it. There is a beauty sitting @ the Lonestar Flight Museum.

that is one awesome plane

Not that the Corsair is quite up to that bomb load, but it could still carry some punch. Biggest loadout I read about was 6-250, 1-500 and 1-1000. Then there were rocket version load outs too.

You are correct. The second pic is a corsair. The space between the fuselage and where the wing is hinged is the same in both pics. It is more pronounced in the first due to the angle & distance the photo was taken from.

the A-10 Warthog was not a bad upgrade..but now they want to kill it. We wont have a dedicated close ground support heavy hitter after that happens.

Tooz:

According to Douglas the Skyraider could launch with a full load of 8000lbs of deadfall ordnance plus a full load of ammo for he 4 20mms. Added up to (along with fuel) 18,030lbs at take off.

Here is an awesome collection of Spad images from the wars it fought in.

And here's one from an official record of the Constellation ready to launch with a full load of bombs and fuel.

The Air Force SAR Sandys carried usually omitted the wing tanks and carried more rockets and napalm. They were outfitted with the FM rescue radios and RDF gear to find and protect downed pilots. Sandys could loiter for hours and had the armor to help them survive ground fire while covering the pilot until the Jolly Greens arrived.

The Navy ones usually carried more deadfall ordnance and were used more for the standard close air support role rather than search and rescue.

If you've seen "We Were Soldiers" then you've seen an excellent depiction of what the planes could do. Same with "Flight of the Intruder", but that was an awful movie...and "Bat-21" which was much better and true.

mmm, rememberd the Skyraider "Sandy" from "Flight of the Intruder" movie :-))
now THATS voulching :-))

The A-10 has been surpassed by the F16 as the ground assault plane...but..i strongly belive the need for the 7*30mm Avenger canon on any battlefield. that's not something the F16 can cary, it would be shreded to pices by the recoil, and the A-10 can take a HELL of alot more punnishment then a F16 (remebered Golf war 1 where a A-10 allmost had the wing knocked off by FLAK (or was it a tree))

The Spad was our favorite. They could come up just over the horizon and linger quite a while, and they carried more ordinance than anybody. Often they were flown by S.Viet.AF pilots. I have some great home movies of them dive-bombing and pulling out below tree top height. Very cool. One day when our camp at Duc Lap was under attack they came in to scrape the Chucks off the wire, and we came out with beer and popcorn, sat on the roof of the commo-bunker, and watched them make their runs. The secondary's where something else. They'd flip up and roll over and come done very steeply inverted. It was a sight. They did not fear the 51 Cal. AAA, the way attack helicopters (Cobras) did.

I agree with you but its kind of like the A-10, ugly but beauty in the power of its uglyness.

Like the monster truck of the sky, the lines are not that clean but lordy can it get the job done.

I love that plane! I used to have a model from Airfix as a lad and it was always the one that saved my boys from the enemy Tanks on my Train set layout. Brings back happy times!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/heart.gif

Man! You gotta love that Skyraider. That's the only plane left I'd want to fly in a VN sim.
