Dear Oleg & Community,

Beside of all discussions about FM/DM, there is a great issue.

I bought a new PC last month and at the beginning I was very happy about it, cause i can now fly with "perfect"-mode on, which looks just incredible.
Now to the problem ... spotting a "dot" with "Stencil Buffer" ON (which is required for "perfect"-mode) is almost impossible since the last patch.
With "Stencil Buffer" OFF I had no problems with spotting dots.

I think many people can confirm this issue and it's easy to recreate.

... and yes this is a whinner-thread, cause the situation to cry http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif

Stencil buffer on or off, spotting dots against terrain is much harder than it has any right to be.

I don't know about other cards, but ATI cards seem to be very bad in this respect. Dot spotting is incredibly inconsistent (note, I'm not saying they *never* appear, I'm saying they don't appear with consistency), and it is quite annoying to watch dots disappear as they get closer to you, especially when you're trying to time a rope-a-dope or stay on top of a dogfight.

Ground targets? Forget it. If you don't see tracer or muzzle flash, you'll almost NEVER see them.

This graphics system is truly AWFUL in creating the visual environment for pilots, even on a CAVU day.

I've been getting a bit cheesed off with the visiblity the last few days too. I have found that slower planes such as Spitfires LaGG 3's and other slow green coloured planes are giving me a tough time.

I just can't see them when they are following me slightly below and I'm extending. I finally think I've out run the guy and start to turn and suddenly he pops out from out of the ground clutter and is on my tail again. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It's crazy I just can't see planes like that against the ground, when I turn to meet them, they can adjust aim instantly but I have to find them again. I have no problems with the lighter coloured P-51's P-38's P-47's and brown coloured La-5's.

I'd say Spitfire, P-39, LaGG 3, MiG 3, I-16 are the hardest planes to see against the ground even when they are merely 700 metres away under your tail.

I tryed this with my 9800pro (4.8 cat) but somehow Il2 refuses to run without Stencil Buffer in OpenGL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Changed it from Setup and confirmed that I was using 9800 radeon settings, but in game it still had Stencil Buffer on. Any suggestions, I really want to see those ground targets from 5000m http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I dunno for me the perfect makes the stuff impossible to spot...today I noticed that there is some difference whether I use IL-2 Manager to select ATI or NVidia shaders but still the spotting is much easier with excellent...any other tips? I don't seem to be able to suppress stencil buffer...

Problem with your screenies, Heinrich is that they're STILLS.

At times, I get that 'clear' a view, too. Targets appearing like little speckles along the ground.

Other times, I see nothing. No rhyme or reason to it.

The other annoying thing is how plane dots, even those within 1km, can suddenly invoke the Klingon Cloaking device, since they're wearing one of the perfectly matched VVS green paint jobs. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Then, with no Red stars on the top wing surfaces, they're totally invisible from above, unless they roll over and show their blue bellies, or fire telltale tracer, you can't see anything of them at engagement range.

Tryed it out Heinrich and it works!!

I see ground targets much better and they are constant not vanishing like with Stencil Buffer on!

Too bad this setting makes the overall game look worse, but its worth it!

Disabling Stencil Buffer is not a fix! More of a workaround, but it costs very much graphics quality. I've upgraded my rig almost a year ago just to have it able to display Perfect with reasonable FPS - now I'm forced to roll back to GF3 settings in order to see something?? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

Yes, it helps, but it's Oleg's work (or rather Yuri's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif) to fix it. It was fine in FB and I don't get why it changed.

One thing that might be the culprit is.......

camouflage.

Another is... that at a certain point (terrain draw) the planes seem to be visible before and after this graphics line. Level of detail.
You'll probably have noticed that at a certain point the plane you are seeing reasonably close loses it's detail and prop(though still clearly identifyable), then again at another point further away, the plane turns to a dot. Then further away again, the dot disappears, then further away again it is viewable as grey or black.

Could be a driver thing

also sometimes u see dot in wide/normal view, u zoom in to id and u cant find it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

its partly u find it hard to see (but there really threre with no icons) or u cant see whatever way u cut it.

also some places run odd dot settings, uk-dedicated being one

Yep, and sometimes the reverse happens you see it in gunsight view and you can't see it in normal or wide view.

Visiblity is as in most sims is far from perfect. Untill it improves I recommend limited icons as a reasonable work around for all these problems. Either that or try various graphic tweaks and live with the issues until they are fixed (probably not till a future sim). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

what's the point - it enables the possibility to turn stencil buffer off but the perfect setting is disabled so I can see the stuff about just as well as normally with excellent settings?

Is there a good way to use perfect settings so that you can still see the dots?

Hi guys!

I found out that spotting dots with stencil buffer on is connected with the daylight!

At 12 o clock its almost impossible to spot them, at 8 clock in the morning or 5 o clock in the evening its not a problem.
