Hello all,

I am about to take the plunge and purchase either an ATi X800 xt platinum or an nVidia 6800 Ultra EE. After reading most of the reviews they seem to be very evenly matched on performance.
Just wondering if any of you people who already have these cards can tell me how you have found them and whether one or the other is a 'preferred solution'.
I play mainly complex simulations like LOMAC, IL-2, Falcon4, and racing sims like F1C, N2003 etc.
The current rig is an P4 3.2 canterwood 875 9800xt setup running WinXPpro.

Thanks and regards

If you're going to buy Pacific Fighters when it's out you'll benefit more form the NVIDA card.

THe water in PF has been enhanced to utilise the new pixel shader 3.0 that NVIDIA uses.

The X800 is basically an upgraded 9800. The nVidia is a whole new card with allready new technologies built in.

For games that are allready out or, coming out in the near future, they will run better in the ATi X800 cards. But I expect future games will run better with the 6800. ATi is bound to come up with a card that has about the same features as the 6800 does now. But, you would have to buy yet another expensive card and your X800 is worth little when that time comes. So, I would stick with the 6800 card.

ALso, everything runs great now on my 9800 so, I will buy another card when I think it is neccesary.

If you have the money and patience wait for the dual card coming from Nvidia. Two 6800 Ultra connected together. Maximum PC thinks it will be twice as fast as a single one, and by the time Pacific Fighters will be out this is going to be the king.

I have been waiting and waiting for the right choice to, now with the last information that PF will be supporting 3.0 shaders and the fact that I am only for 5% FPS (Half-Life-2) fan and 95% (Oleg) SIM fan my new system that I will buy at the end of November it will for the most important parts be build around an AMD FX-55, 2 GB of memory and TWO GeForce 6800 Ultra EE cards in SLI mode and last but not least one big power supply of 650 watt.

I think you are wrong. New gpu, new technology. ATI handles frame rates better with eye candy turned up. I've owned both. X800 m8. Even the X800Pro VIVO can be flashed to the XT PE pretty much with ease. Save a $ or two that way.

No, new silicon, new everything.

I'd say 6800 though, it has some very clever technology that will make a difference in future games.

I'd go with the X800 XT, why? First of all it is very much a matter of personal taste. My opinion is that the ATI card is much more stable compared to the Nvidia card. When the 9700 pro was released, Nvidia released the 5700 very quickly, hence the size and loudness of the card. A few months later the card was improved, becoming more quite and smaller.
We see the excact same thing here. The X800 takes up alot less space and requires only 300 W, while the 6900 require as much as 480 W, aswell as sounding like a vacuumcleaner.

IMHO, Nvidia has always been in the wake of ATI.

Link to ATI and Nvidia comparisons.

Oberleutnant Oskar-Walter Romm thoughts on his aircraft.

"I found the Fw 190D-9 to be greatly superior to those of my opponents. During dogfights at altitudes of between about 10,000 and 24,000ft, usual when meeting the Russians, I found that I could pull the D-9 into a tight turn and still retain my speed advantage. In the descent the Dora-9 picked up speed much more rapidly than the A type; in the dive it could leave the Russian Yak-3 and Yak-9 fighters standing."

two major drawbacks of all 6800 cards, they take up TWO slots not one!

and second you may have to spend another couple hundred bucks because you need a power supply of 480 watts minimum, most of us have 300 or 350 watts.

and many puters that are older dont have the room for the 6800s

noise factor on 6800 is much louder.

also the ATI X800 XT PLATINUM is rated higher on many online testings against the 6800 Ultra.

and the ATI card doesnt overheat like the older 9800 cards. and takes less power than the older 9800s too.

do serious homework before spending 500 bucks on vid cards is my advice. i always disliked ATI but i am sold on the X800 XT PLATINUM over the 6800 Ultra

My 6800 GT required a 300W PS. I have a 450W PS,I dont think I would go with the min PS because I run 4 case fans.

Not ALL 6800s take up 2 slots, only the Ultra versions. And only the highest end cards need super power supplies.

I've had my 6800 GT less than a week and I can say only great things about it. It actually makes my 9800 Pro look like a budget card. Ouch.

You couldn't give me another ATI card. Maybe if I needed an anchor for a really small boat, but even then, I'd prefer to use an obsolete nVidia card because I could count on it to sink.

I'm an ATi guy, but unwavering product faithful;ness is stupid. Get the 6800. PS3.0 for PF.

Also, the latest release from Nvidia has a statment that Nvidia was "...more conservative than they needed to be with regards to the power supply requirements. 350w is enough."

This is in the newest PCGamer btw.

I went with the ATI. It tooks months (literally) of toil and struggle, but I finally got my hands on an Excalibur X800 XT PE with IceQII Cooling. For those of you not familiar the HIS Excalibur uses and proprietary cooling and heatsink arrangement that runs the X800 XT about 10 to 15* cooler than other cards and, by using a larger slower fan, about 10 db quieter.

The down side is you lose access to a PCI slot as the card uses the next slot over to vent the hot air out the BACK of the case as opposed to the normal card that just pumps hot air into the case.

Don't know FPS but I'm running full out offline in "perfect" with all the bells and whistles using the Cat 4.9 drivers and new skin.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.
