View Full Version : Minimap path realism suggestion/request

In RL crews would normally have some sort of route marked on their map - particularly bomber & attack crews, maybe not fighter pilots on CAP. Would it be possible if the minimap realism button just turned off the own aircraft map icon? That way you would be left with your planned route marked on the map.

I know many co-op makers alleviate the problem by putting carefully chosen objectives on the map. However, sometimes you really want flights of aircraft to follow a specific route. It would take a very long time in the briefing pages to memorize a long route, so it's difficult to achieve this at present with full realism.

Is it possible to leave the route marked on your map, but still remove the own aircraft map icon?

This, although an old suggestion, is still a great and simple idea.

Bump.

Great idea. Also is it possible to have the map rotate 90deg increments.I use a map by turning so that I am traveling up and the way it is now it disorientates me big time.

Yes, and you'd write the track (+/- drift to get hdg) by each leg, so you know what to steer. Maybe ETAs at turns and distances to go.

The lack of waypoint information on the kneeboard is completly non-historical. Especially for bombers. If you aren't the mission maker there is currently no way for you to know what altitude or time you are supposed to be at a certain rondo point. Makes it pretty difficult to coordinate with an escort or be an escort if the bombers are coming from elsewhere.

Getting rid of your aircraft's "GPS like" positining system was a good thing. Removing the route and waypoints (and never adding in the waypoint info) was the wrong thing to do.

Heartily AGREE !!!!!

Each side needs their own waypoints on the map. without the little white GPS plane.

At the moment i use a paper map for tracks.
I would much prefer this option.

Adding a marker to the map you can move to indicate your last Navigation fix would be even better. I hate it when i knock the mouse pointer.

great idea

i got an idea ... why dont you guys print the maps out in A3 format on paper and keep it on the table beside the joystick ... and use a pencil .... way more realistic http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have printed maps but in game map waypoints are badly needed especially in online wars VOW/VEF cus waypoints are pre set and u have only limited time before start /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Or you could just print out the maps and laminate them. Then draw the route on with a dry wipe pen and use a suitable compass bought from the outdoor sports shop to navigate the waypoints. That's the way it was done in real life.

You use the mouse pointer too, eh /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yes, paper maps are most realistic, although I'm not sure they had laminated ones in WW2. However, as has been said, that isn't practical for online wars or casual co-ops.

I do use a kneeboard--that's better than nothing but why simulate a kneeboard map in game and only give the options of omnipotent being or total *******?

There is still the problem of me not being able to tell the time and altitude of waypoints if I wasn't the mission creator...

Join any coop mission and try and figure out your waypoint info such as time on target or altitude. Only way to know is let the AI fly lead and follow them...

Offline neither the in-game DGen or DCG (Low's excellent alternative to DGen) offer up the info.

For fighter's it's not such a big problem (unless they are supposed to rendevous with bombers) but for bombers this info is critical.

The fact that it is missing...and never provided is glaring error.
