They started with 55% and noone could recover in such a short amount of time

Might as well just give it to the vikings every season because apparently you get punished for taking territory and when the thing ends at night you lose because you conquered lands and couldnt defend because you need to sleep

The territories should start at 50% each regardless of position

I second this. In the CLOSED beta Vikings won because there was an hour left and likely no comeback. However, in this there is 4 hours, where a lot of things can happen.

The system is fine the way it is, the closer you get to a factions fort the harder it should be to continue the advance.

Think of it this way, when you play a strategy game, you fortify the territories near your "main city" so that if your opponent breaks through your borders they will have a harder time getting to you. The way they have it now is the most logical way to do it.

You need to sleep yes, the war of factions is worldwide so when its time to sleep in your timezone others are waking up. The assets u add to your faction is a small thing compared to all the assets ur faction have per turn, just think about the community events where they asked for 1.600.000 eliminations, how much did u get? and community still made it with a lot of timeleft.
