Well, besides being one of the sweetest planes ever to fly, I believe they were used in the defense of the Phillipines (for about 2 days http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)
A beautiful aircraft, no?

Taken from http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p26_6.html

"There were still some P-26s sitting on the flight line at Wheeler Field at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Six of them were destroyed and one was damaged.

Most of those P-26s that had been stationed in the Philippines had been sold to the government of the Philippines by the time of the Japanese attack. The Philippine government acquired 12 P-26As beginning in July of 1941. Some of these P-26s were serving with the 6th Pursuit Squadron of the Philippine Army Air Force based at Batangas Field at the time of the Japanese attack. Despite their total obsolescence, the Filipino P-26s succeeded in scoring some victories against the Mitsubishi A6M Zero during the first few days of the Japanese attack. One of the Philippine P-26s is credited with shooting down the first Japanese plane destroyed during the early attacks on the islands. The best-known action took place on December 12, 1942, then a group of six Philippine P-26s led by Capt. Jesus Villamor shot one bomber and two Zeros with the loss of three P-26s. However, the few P-26s operated by the Philippine Army Air Force were quickly overwhelmed by the onslaught of the Japanese Zero fighters, and the surviving P-26s were destroyed on the ground by Filipinos to prevent them from falling into enemy hands".

Couldn't exactly be called an important type, but it sure would be fun!

I'd love to see this one. Right after the Shinden.

Aka: Last

The P-26 actually saw combat, albeit briefly and under the colors of the Philippine Air Force. It's pilots claimed several Japanese planes, including A6M2s, shot down.

Total time J7W1 Shinden flew in all of WWII?
45 minutes
Fact.

I agree with Chris. I also think it's the forgotten, obscure planes that makes sims like FB (and hopefully PF) great. It better fleshes out the game world. After all, there were many more planes than just the well known ones like the Corsair and Hellcat in the PTO. I do feel, however, that these obscure planes shouldn't take precedence over the "superstars". Maybe they can be included in later patches,or if a modeller has some extra time before the initial release,in the sim itself. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

the P-26 was a fantastic little A/C

its the lesser knowen planes that gave IL2 : Sturmovik such great appeal

migs
laggs
Lavochkins

not that well knowen , & gave the game a slant not widely seen

the P-26 was a great little A/C

And while we're at it, how about the P-35?

The one-and-only P-35 kill was also the first kill of the war in the Western Pacific.

Link to amazing war story, full of luck, incompetence, and drama! (http://www.flightjournal.com/articles/bettertobelucky/lucky.asp)

What a great "what if": take your obsolete P-26s and P-35s and see if YOU could have made a difference.

Luthier: can you program U.S. flack to shoot at all aircraft for the first few months of the war?!

Ah, erm...how can u see the P-26 as a good looking plane? I think it's uggly and heavy looking...

And they say the Fiat G-50 is ugly.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I vote against...there is far too many really important planes that will deserve to be on the game before the P-26 (IMO)

I agree with Xanty on this one. I think there's many more aircraft maybe not yet being modelled but did see a lot of action, at least a lot more than the P-26.
Ofcourse having as many planes as possible would be great but I'd rather have a selection of planes that saw a lot of action than the more 'odd' or 'rare' aircraft. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I don't think anyone is saying that the development of the "odd" planes should take precedence over the well known birds. However, there's no reason why these forgotten planes couldn't be added at a later date.
