Nice story. Spitfire MkVIII had similar capability. Closterman was surprised how quickly (without touching the throttle) his spit climbed high to the sky, after high speed dive chase for G-10(?).

Lavochkin pilots were instructed that every 10 (?) minutes of flight fly at full throttle for about 2 minutes, in order to clean up the spark plugs.

Leaded gas; fouled plugs. Many of you don't remember the days before unleaded gas, but us old farts loved having an excuse to run the engines up ("Oh, no, Officer. We weren't getting ready to race. We were just burnin' some of the crud off our plugs") back in the day.

You had to change or clean the plugs at the same time you changed your oil and filters, or once every 3000 miles. If you did a lot of stop-and-go, low rev, driving, you had a LOT of crud on them. I can well imagine that a high performance engine like the Merlin could get a lot more buildup in a vey short time at low revs (like taxiing and waiting for take-off, weaving back and forth over the bomber stream, etc), and firewalling it afterwards would likely blow the bigger chunks off intact.

Mustangs were notorious for fouled spark plugs. It was not uncommon for a pilot returned from a long lonely trip back from Germany insisting that the engine had started running rough and that the plugs needed to be changed.

Was that from "An Escort of P-38s"?

cheers

Horseback, it's ironic you mention "An Escort of P-38s" as I just learned of the paasing of the book's author, John Mullins, earlier tonight.

He was a nice guy and keeper of the history of the 1st.FG. He sent me an autographed copy of the book a longtime ago as thanks for putting up some information on the 1st.Ftr. Grp. on the net. He also wrote an excellent history of the 94th. Ftr. Sqdn. in WWII that was published as a spiral-bound book, the title of it totally escapes me, however...
