Hey, this is a little off topic, but, what are the root file names for Battlefield 1942? C:/Program Files/EA GAMES/Battlefield1942? The update won't install because it can't find the file.

Also I was looking for some advice on how to get more out of my system. I'm stuck with a school leased laptop to play IL2FB. Here are the specs:
P4 2.18 GB
25GB HD
258MB RAM
The problem is the stock intel chipset which has a mere 8mb of virtual memory. Obviously, a hardware upgrade is out of the question. Is there anything I can do to speed this thing up? Besides upgrading the driver? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I don't know about BF1942, but the other issue.

Kill all unnecessary apps from the background (use ctrl-alt-del), use smaller screen, no bg pic in windows, use smaller BPP (16 bits, instead of 24,32 bits) in both windows and the game. Be also realistic that it cannot really handle all the goodies in the game, so just put details down (sorry, but that's the fact). If you are a freak, you could even disable some HW ports (floppy drive too) from both Windows and even from BIOS (you won't get much better performance that way, but maybe 1FPS).

Only sensible way to better performance is by HW update (or even better machine):

Your main problem is the memory. I have 1GB and it's not too much (assuming that the other choice would be 512MB). For example if you fly near Leningrad, the game chokes and is probably swapping all the time. Remember that Windows takes a lot of mem too (especially XP).

Because it is a laptop, the special mem it takes (usually) is more expensive and wouldn't fit any 'normal' machine I suppose. So it wouldn't make sense to buy extra mem by yourself (you probably couldn't use the mem in your computer if you buy one later). Also laptops have a lousy GPU (graphics processor) often so that could be reason too (they are usually far from radeon 9800 level). Personally I don't touch laptops even with a long stick unless I have to.

Sorry that I cannot help more.

Thanks for the tips http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Yeah most of the details are turned down except for view distance cause I hate the fog. It runs decent, its just that a lot of time the computer gets over loaded and it freezes up. Ussually if I restart the computer each time before I play (to reset virtual memory) it runs alright, but I can't do many campaigns because as soon as I get more than 10 planes or so the framerate turns to mud. Anyways I was wondering if there was any other tricks in the BIOS or cache stuff I could do to tweak this thing up a bit. It sucks this comp. has so much poten http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.giftial to kick @ss if it had any kind of a decent 3D Accelerator. I can't pull it apart because its school leased and I'd be screwed.

Also, is C:/EA/Battlefield1942 the right root? any ideas?
