Hi Slammin

First of all let me say how much i enjoy your server, also I have seen threads before that get quite whiney and im conscious of that too. U provide quite selflessly a great free and exciting server.

I really like externals and cockpit on. although i hammer the f6 key like a maniac! (weak i know)
one thing tho, limited icons, presently your server is set that the enemy have no icon only friendly. to me that seems weird and i found myself hitting f6 to track the target then losing it on the cockpit screen cos i just couldnt see it. I agree icons are unrealistic, but they are enabled for friendlies. In addition the view from a rubbish monitor and graphics limitation render it pain to track enemies and decide on fligthpaths.

i found it quite unplayable. im sure people will disagree and thats fair enough. also feel free to tell me to get stuffed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

but if your going to enable externals, then why not full icons, it seems a strange setting to hide the enemies even tho they can quite easily be tracked with f6?

just a suggestion http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

kind regards

dazza

ps i posted this on the forum so other people can debate this if they want, and show me the error of my ways.

Hey now, having externals allows all players to play. There are other servers that are full real. This is one that you can just relax in and enjoy, of course you really cant enjoy it when people dont READ THE RULES. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif Other that that I think the addition of no-cockpit was all it needed. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yup...there are plenty of nice full real or nearly full real servers. Need some like Slammins and 161st to stretch out and relax in...

Just shoot at the guys without the icons next to their planes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Does anyone truly think this game is any different without externals enabled? The only things I find different about flying Full D, is that it just makes the game longer, more flying around doing nothing, but scanning the skies and easily pouncing unsuspecting pilots, who most times don't even have time to defend themselves.

Once the enemy is engaged, the dogfight is exactly the same as it is with externals enabled and pit off. The only minor differences is that extreme deflection shots are minimized and you can't go outside to follow the plane. With TrackIR, who needs externals? Or padlock for that matter?

The anality of the people who fly this game and think they are Aces because they fly Full D never ceases to amaze me. An Ace can adapt to any situation, any server, any enemy and especially learn to counter any other Ace's patented move.

The true Aces learn from losing, learn from every engagement and don't give a rat's butt what the server settings are. They just fly and collect kills as usual.

My experience has been that most Full D and B and Z pilots flying this game realized they didn't have what it takes to compete on fun or medium/hard servers, so they thought it best to fly high or gain an advantage in Full D with TrackIR and no padlock.

Keep externals on Slammin's server. It's a great place to fly against the best pilots, in the settings that are the majority way people fly this game. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/smileys-gun2.gif

Thing is, some people want the realism.
I think it's not stupid flying around, but being aware of the airspace around you, to see an enemy before he sees you.
If you can see your own teammates it's realistic, you'd be in contact with them and aware of their position while still having to find the enemy.

Hey, I'm all for diverse servers out there to cater to everyones favorite flavor.

I was merely pointing out, that complaining, or griping or whining (or whatever else you want to call it) about a setting on a server is ridiculous. Running these servers costs money and while it is perceptually FREE to get online and join in on any server someone is paying.

Making constructive suggestions or questioning to understand "why" a server's settings are like they are is fine, but don't criticise or complain.

I have my preferred settings and fly them every chance I get. If I go to another server, I can view the settings before-hand and know what I'm getting into.

I LIKE Slammin_'s server and fly there occassionally. Otherwise, I'll look for a server that's scripted with ground targets as well as flying opponents.

Rant over.

I am well aware of the dangers of this straying from constructive debate. However my original intent was not to debate the relative merits of full real' versus other settings, although I agree with many of the posters.

My main question is the issue of limited icons, I can understand why you might want these in a full real server so you can flagellate yourself and pretend your in amongst the oil, cold and fear of 60 years ago (joke). However last night I was finding it difficult to distinguish enemies on my monitor. I then found myself reaching instinctively for F6' to try to track the target before returning to cockpit to fire, and then promptly losing it again. Why introduce a setting to simulate realism when its already been rendered irrelevant by external views? It reduced my playing experience to squinting at the screen and frantically switching views to cope with this weird hindrance.

161ST and Slammin's are almost identical servers except for this setting. I for one think Slammin is the poorer for it.

Ultimately though as has been said it's a free service and an admirable one. I am just an unwashed noob with questioning instinct and bad eyesight.

S! Slammin, please don't take this the wrong way

Should u read it!

make friendly and enemy icons identical. it's really that simple.

I must say i love slammins and War Clouds settings ...its the spotting the bogey part of it that i enjoy, however the screen freezes can sometimes get too much, i presume this is lag.
Also i didnt know about the f6 option...kewl http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif...only joking this should definately go...and i didnt know people used the external view for spotting bogeys, i thought it was for taxiing to the runway...i'm too busy trying to fly the right way up to play with this view http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm going to set up a QMB right now and see what the F6 does.

As for server settings, my intent is, and always has been, to achieve the quickest engagement of the enemy as possible, but remain fun and challenging too!

I just don't have that much time to fly and when I do make time, I like to spend it shooting stuff.

As was said, shoot at the ones with no icons! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
