View Full Version : Ditched planes don't count as kills?

I'm flying Hurricanes in a custom early war campaign. On my first two flights I downed a Ju-88 and a Fiat G.50 repectively. In my next two missions I forced a Ju-87 and an He-111 to ditch... the first at sea and the other on land. But I noted that the last two didn't count as "kills." Not a big deal. At least I have the psychological satisfaction of knowing I did some damage. Is this reflective of how kills were tallied in the war or it is just something to do with the game?

As far as the real world goes, a 'kill' is a neat shorthand but it obscures some grey areas. I rather like this quote from Mike Spick's 'Luftwaffe Flighter Aces' :

- an aerial victory occurs when an enemy is defeated in combat in circumstances where the victor believes that it will be a total loss.

So if he goes down on your side of the lines, that's a clear victory or 'kill'. His side of the lines, it gets less clear. If he makes a good belly landing, the plane might be salvageable. If you see it wrap itself around a tree, that looks like a valid victory claim.

As far as the game goes, you could try waiting after the action is over, with time x8. If the engine's smoking on the ditched plane, there's a good chance it will eventually blow up and you get your kill.

Have you installed the 1.11 patch?

Ditched planes will explode after resting on the ground for a minute or two, giving you the kill. This was introduced for the very reason you have stated.

Seems to me the game gives credit for kills too easily. You ever been on an RTB, 5 min after the action and out of the blue get an enemy AC destroyed message? I understand the code benefits from this simplification, I'm just saying.
