View Full Version : Why I don't fly anymore

I used to use the wonderwoman view and external views. But I read some posts here about it being unrealistic. So to that end, I used Full Real settings exclusivley.

Unfortunately, I'm a coward and fear death. So after I got shot down ( and to make it more realistic, I shot myself in the leg and set fire to my face), I found myself getting the jitters when I launched hyperlobby.

Now and again I join the lobby and then get drunk. I tell my squadmates that I have neuralgia and the CO grounds me.

This is how to play FB full real, it's great. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bah! Soapy, that's not full real, you arcade player you. For 'real full real', or RFR, as we historical fanatics call it, you must do all that you describe, but as you play, you need friends who carry you between a deep freeze and a furnace to simulate the poor climate control of these aircraft (co-ordinated with your altitude, obviously...)

Most people get this wrong of course (noobs...) and think that it just goes on getting colder as you fly higher. They are forgetting the heating effect as you get nearer the sun, which is quite significant with the non-uv proofed canopies used in Russian a/c..

The technologically far superior German a/c used 'antirechtungssehenheat' glass, or 'arse glass' to counter this effect, so it's a bit easier to go RFR if you are a luftwhiner..

I believe that Oleg has deliberately undermodelled the arse glass so that VVS fanatics have an advantage when playing RFR...

Well, Soapy, at least you realize your limitations and understand that they're tied to your arcade settings "choices".

Carry on. Or, for more "fun", take up the challenge.

I bet you shot yourself with a Luftwaffe weapon, didn't you? We RFR experten are quite clear that Oleg has undermodelled all real luftwaffe weapons because he hates them.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Was there an enormous muzzle flash, but very little effect on your (presumably Russian) leg? - There you go then!!

Ahh, the way you guys talk ! I used to fly Ki-84 exclusively RFR, but after doing some of the above, I also disembowel myself if I fail a big mission, but after too many of those, I couldn't go on anymore.

Hi,

Cold? What cold? I plug a Pifco miniboil into my 190's cigar lighter to brew up while I wait for someone to bnz. Otherwise, I have a 3 bar electric fire plugged into it.

Warm as toast.

Cheers,
Norris

Now see that's really funny. 'Cause since I'm a FR guy in FB, I've been trying to do sort of the opposite and have arcade settings for real life.

The trick is to take enough acid so that you start to see icons floating over people's heads that say their names and how many meters they are from you. People you like have your team color and people you don't like have the other team's color. Also, you gain the ability to see right through yourself anytime you want. And it allows you to see through your car while driving too. So long blind spot!

Lastly, it's really handy to be able to float outside yourself to see if there are any people approaching that you don't want to deal with (mainly those with the opposing colored icons floating over them).

Of course the down side of this is that taking that much acid can cause you to have flashbacks at inappropriate times. Like, say you're shaving and suddenly- BOINK! You start to see through yourself. Break out the stiptic pencil. Or try explaining to your wife that you were just tracking the range on that girl who was walking by. Hard sell that one.

Anyway, you guys continue to have fun with self-mutilation and I'll keep up with mind alteration.

Wow ... shooting your selves, mind alteration ... you guys are a shocking distance ahead of me in pursuit of RFR [pulls bare electric wires off rudder pedals] I give up http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Lilhorse: I like that!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif AL (Arcade Life..) certainly fits my lifestyle - it's just that I don't need any mind altering drugs for the effect - I just live in modern Britain...

Hey guys, it kinda looks like I've started a new concept: the 'Real Full Real' boys. Keep the variants coming: makes me laff. "RFR Rules OK". It's gonna drive some competitive individuals mad trying to track the concept.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

"Jeez - those guys play RFR: lose, and you're banned for life from all their servers - hey and they have people who beat them over the head with a mallet at LAN parties when their plane takes hits, to simulate being shot." " Full Real? - that's for Arcade pussies...

Oh - and I play the game in one of those centrifuge jobbies that they use to whirl astronoaut candidates round and round in, so I suffer real G effects. It was quite hard until I realised that the computer would have to be battery powered - I kept ripping the plug out of the wall socket.

For full RFR it's a problem, cos it means I can only fly round and round in circles if I'm not to get confused and lose situational awareness - but hey, that's the only way I can fly anyway..

Great stuff chaps, this RFR lark has certainly come a long way in the last few months.

Tonight, I might bite the bullet and fly some FB.

I have my gun, petrol and a large steak knife ( no Japanese sword here http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ) to make sure I do the full RFR deal.

To emulate non fatal hits and general flack activity, the wife will stand behind me with a large cricket bat, and whack my head every now and then.

I have moved the PC near the window ( I live 18 floors up ) to emulate bailing out and having a bad chute. This should be the final missing item of the RFR experience.

I will of course shout "Geronimo" as I sail by my neighbours windows and head for the deck.

Ah the good old Fightin' Irish, I've ran away from many an air combat with you lads, Always a pleasure to hide in a cloud as you fly along beneath me, then I land near the brewery and get royally drunk whilst singing Garryowen at the top of my voice http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm still 112th through and through though, they put up with my lack of courage and treat me well. Some of them have even bought me a pint or two http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Russian aircraft require skill to fly.
German aircraft require ten times that skill, and one hundred times the patience!

I recently installed several strobe lights with mega-candlepower by my PC so that every time I fire my guns it's synchronized with Oleg's muzzle flashes.

I just sleep in a shack with poor heating and eat powdered eggs & milk every day for breakfast. It sux being a FR vfp and living in the barracks.. Actually, I dont do it to be more real, I do it because that's what my wife and I agreed on.

You other mid-switch guys have it so easy... For us we find ways to make ourselves suffer.

Worse for me is when I crash and skip along the ground before blowing up. In the FR Recipe Book it reads:

"...to simulate skidding along the ground before exploding receive severe rug burn over 90% of the body (suggest using a very coarse hallway runner or have a good friend tie a chain around your wrists and drag you around the nieghbor hood with his car), then poor three gallons of rubbing alcohol.. Let it really work it's way into the wounds. If possible work it in some more with your hands and a coarse wash cloth. Next, light and count to nine, screaming as you do....Preferred screams are the following, 'oh noooooooooOOOOoooo, no, no no, ahhh, no no NOOOOOOOOAAAAAHHHOOOOOOOO!' or 'Ahhhhhh ahhh ahhhhhhhHHHHhhHHHhhHHHHHHhhhhh'"
