Hi,

Im a bit baffled as to what altitude the planes in IL2 should be flying at.

Take for example a flight of HE 111's on a bombing run. How high did they fly? And what about their fighter excort, were they a couple of thousand feet higher or more. Would there have been a second group of fighters even higher?

And then, when it came to bombing, what altitude did they drop from?

Seems my game play is a bit limited in this dimension, spend most of my time at the 2 - 3K mark.

thanks,

Altiudes on the Eastern Front were much lower than those found over the West. Until later in the war, most engagements were below 10,000 feet. I believe that this was because the air combantants where considered as "support" for the ground operations, by both sides and not as a purely offensive "strike force" in its' own right. I could be wrong, but there is strong evidence that the Luftwaffe was used primarily as "long range, mobile artillery" for most of the Eastern Theatre. The fighters were only there to protect the bombers and even they were heavily used for "moving mud".

According to books written by soviet pilots...

JU-88, he-111 would be 3-5km... sometimes 7
JU87 1-3KM
Fighter cover 1-2km above.

The info that came with the game (i.e. the training mission for the Heinkel bombing) says that the He111 bombsight isn't very accurate at all above 1500m. Now, I don't know if they went ahead and flew higher anyway, to escape the flak, and "who cares what we hit.. it's near a city, we're bound to get Somebody!" I've tried to keep it right at the 1500 mark, but that's suicide with the radar-enhanced, satellite uploaded, thermal/ir/ultrasound AAA guns in FB. Anyone have any luck bombing from significantly higher?
