Hi...IL2 noob here. I've had plenty of experience with WarBirds and WW2OL, but stil getting used to IL2.

So far my biggest problem is teling the enemy from friendlies. I have no way to set myself up for an attack because I can't tell who to attack! No useful tags or circles to help me spot them.

Any tips on spotting the enemy?

Thanks.

Online or off? Offline, you can go into your difficulty settings and enable tags or whatever you like. You can also enable the map to allow spotting of incoming enemy.
Of course, if you want to be the absolute-sim guy, you would refuse all those aids.
Many long arguments over this, but IMHO, the difficulties imposed by the game justify at least some crutches. Unless you're running a really fantastic rig with super-resolution, there's almost no way to identify an aircraft that's more than a couple hundred yards away.

Online, in the typical dogfight server, you of course just shoot at everyone...hehe. That's a whole different kettle of fish, as guys tend to fly whatever plane they like on whatever side they like. You might encounter a German Yak or a Russian 109.
Shame on the host for not imposing restrictions.

In the coop-type servers, you'll generally be limited to a particular type of aircraft.

Talk only for yourself.. many good server you can only fly specific periord planes with correct marking and correct cammo.

Usually you can ID any plane at firing distance. A good hitn is the tracers type and pattern of fire.

If brute force does not solve your problem... you are not using enough!

sounds like you are flying icons off

if icons are enabled you can toggle them by setting a key to them

if you are flying online some servers turn icons off .. in that case the graphics in game are not good enough to easily identify planes by profile at a distance (though it can be done) but there are a few tricks you can use including:

LW planes seem bigger
VVS planes often look "blueish"
LW planes often look "yellowish"
LW tracer is usually blue

And mine's the plane that's smoking!

Zoom and ID.

Look for shape, markings, etc...

The longer you play the easier it is

Always know it's enemy before firing, and don't always count on the pilot wearing right markings.

I'm beginning to fly with icons off too. I usually try to get close to suspected enemy plane and id it when i get close. Some planes are easier to be recoqnised ex: Bf110, P38, IL-2, He-111, Stukas. Guess it first based on position and other aircraft that you can identify (ex: friendly ac chasing the plane), close the distance so you can id it (see the shape and markings).

Btw if you fire on friendly in offline your colleagues will tell you to stop firing at friendlys.

Good luck.

Me:"Do you see that pilot flying the Spitfire in the photo above?" [Brief pause] "That's not me"
Girl of my dream: "So you're the one taking the picture?" [Hopeful and interested]
Me:"Nooo, i'm the one who lent the camera" -God bless you all!

Once you get into the habit of staying away from the free for all any plane any side servers and you get more into the Axis vs Allies thing it will become easier. To tell the truth it is very difficult to tell a blue P-51 from a red one without icons unless you are up close or unless it has distinctive markings, and usually by then someone is on you like a cheap suit trying to take YOU down. That was my first major turn off with the run of the mill DF servers... too much like a CFS FFA. Once you get into servers with restricted plane sets..(Axis vs Allied at the very least) it is easier to ID planes. I do sometimes mistake Mustangs for 109s.. like the real pilots did on occasion. Practice without icons. Offline it is actually more fun (no icons)because you dont have the feeling that some person is shooting you down... because you know it is AI your ego takes a back seat and you can concentrate more on honing your skills and less on payback and pride. Also watch tracks. When you watch them zoom in and out. Look at the planes from different angles and distances. This sim is fantastic and has built into it as it is a whole bunch of tools to set you on your way. You sometimes just have to think out of the box. Of course it could always be better... some areas could be alot better... but it is within itself a pretty good tool that can actually carry over into other areas like SA when driving, gunnery etc.
