Shift+0 (zero) will switch between auto and manual pitch on the planes that have both (German). You can then assign keys to your stick, or use the keyboard to change the settings.

Are you in FB or the original IL2? I'm assuming by your post you know how to get to the key assignments. It may help if you don't bother setting keys for each individual prop setting, and just set two; one for increase pitch and one for decrease pitch. I use two joystick buttons, and it accepted those just fine.

i got that part.. but when should you increase or decrease the pitch?? i always just leave it alone but people say if you use it, it gives better performance. i tried decreasing as i go up, but it just slows me down. i tried decreasing as i go down, but what's the point? i can just as well go down without decreasing it.

What plane are you flying?

If you are flying Russian planes there's not that much increase or decrease in revs when using prop pitch.

It's a totally different story in a Bf109.
The prop pitch works like gears in a car, where 100% pp is like 1st gear 80% second gear etc..

To get the hang of pp, fly the 109 leaving the throttle set on say 90%, and use the pp to increase or decrease revs when climbing or diving.
Try and stay between 2700 and 3000 rpm in a dogfight and keep your speed up.

what about the p47 or p39?

They have constant speed props. Just leave them on 100% for best performance. If you want some economy, you can set it at 90%. It will just lower the rpm.

To get a real feel for manual prop pitch. You need to fly the 109's on manual pitch.
