A lot of people like to see new screenshots of new games before they're released, even if they don't post on here, and you should be glad we're actually taking the time to show you the game before launch, a lot of companies wouldn't.

Thanks for the update.
Regarding pilots on lifeboats, can they be "rescued" by by nearby boats or seaplanes?

And other more important question, is this Luthier's face on the second dingy?

Thanks!

liferafts = rescure missions?

Maybe a subliminal message? (like he is in need of rescue from workloads!)

Indeed, any PF picture is welsome. Thanks!

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif at s.bush. How can you complain at these updates...

Anyway, thanks for the updates, they are a little weekly rendez-vous I appreciate very much. I like this destroyer more than the lifeboat http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Man, some of us are getting spoiled. Unless we get a new game, patch, playable demo, tricked out H2 Hummer or a naked Liv Tyler in the update nothing else is worthy. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/smileys-gun2.gif

Just think we can be fans of one of those games that hardly ever get an update, even screenshots !

Is this an intentional wind-up and are you for real? I can see why Oleg and crew find "communication with the community" to be sometimes disheartening. Also... who is "where"? Not only do you have the spelling wrong but you also, most likely, do not speak for most of the people who post here.

btw. before you get critical of updates you have to remember that you haven't shown us any of the updates from your game. Oh... you don't have one.

on a kinder note... the destroyer looks pretty cool.

Notning like having whiners whine about the updates. Sad to say the least. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

UbiRazz the liferafts look good. At least now the downed pilots won't be seen "running" across the water and diving in. LOL

And hopefully you guys keep updates coming on Fridays. It's something good to look forward too and...... keeps almost all of us drooling. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Most games don't update at all, except for in spurts where the Marketing dept deems appropriate. You seem to think that Oleg's entitled to give you the best updates every week with the coolest shots.

Graphics as always are amazing. You have some typos though, second row, the first and last screens are A6M2 Zeroes, not Vals. Also, coulda swore Ilya told me in person, but aren't the planes going be a light olive color instead of silver in PF?

Love the updates. Thanks.

Thanks for another great update (please ignore Mr. Bush, heh heh!) They just keep getting better--even if a few of those "Vals" look a wee bit Zeke-esque http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif.

Keep up the great work!

Lame troll, 1:10.

Great work, guys, thanks for the updates! BTW, anyone working on ships wants images of small japanese cargo ships (by far the most common types of shipping targets during the war) let me know, I will have a 2 CD-ROMs full of images by mid week.

Oh yeah! I'm starting to love this! Can't wait at all. A definite buy for me. Will the downed pilots be rescuable? It would mean a whole new thing for the game.

Oh yeah, and there's an error in your Akizuki destroyer (the actual model, not the caption text). The Japanese text is reading as "Akijiki" instead of "Akizuki" across the hull. The "zu" character is written incorrectly.

Tater-SW-
07-23-2004, 10:45 AM
BTW, what year were the Akizukis laid down? It shows up as DD UN-1 (unknown DD-1) in the USN 1943 recognition manual. Their tonnage estimate was 2300. That's a BIG DD for the IJN.

Laid down in May 25, 1943. At 2,700 tons, she was pretty big. Started design in 1939 as a carrier escort destroyer, but by the time it came out most of Japan's carriers were gone.

I'm all for any/all ships we get, but we'd be better served by earlier war ships (on both sides), IMHO. Particularly given the fact this is a flight sim, ships are TARGETS <G>, smaller ships mean targets for a wider range of aircraft than larger ships.

Keep the updates coming, please! They're something to look forward to every week.

I also noticed that those Vals have the unit markings for Soryu, rather than Akagi. It makes me wonder how thorough they're going to be in having the right markings for each carrier. Its not a big deal, but the more detail, the better.

I don't normally write in the Dev updates, generally because I'm stunned speachless! In this case, s.bush's idiocy seems to counter the stunning effect nicely.
Brilliant work folks, I'm loving it more and more!

Quick question, will the life raft be in AEP/FB as well? I know they mentioned the merging of the two if you have them, that would mean ccombining aircraft... but ships/vehicles/lifey-rafty thingies? Even if it's a no, that's just peachy! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Well, more importantly, will they have the correct aircraft on the correct carriers??

Twice there have been pics of the HMS Illustrious with a deck full of Seafires!!

Seafires equipped only ONE SQUADRON aboard the HMS Illustrious during the entire war. This squadron was aboard from June 1943 - October 1943, then they were no longer on the Illustrious.

Now, considering the Illustrious didn't go to the Pacific until 1944, kinda says that she didn't carry Seafires in the Pacific!! She carried Corsairs and Avengers, if memory serves.

I really hope that the correct aircraft will be allocated to the correct carriers for the offline campaigns (but of course, it will be cool to assign whatever aircraft we like to a certain carrier for the online stuff!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif )

Speaking of the Akizuki...

Would anybody know why it is that the characters on the side of the ship are written in Katakana? I always thought Katakana was a character set used for words not of Japanese origin... Akizuki is clearly a Japanese word.

Thanks, Goshikisen (Mr. Romanji)

Wrong actually m8, get your katakana book out http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

More shots here
http://www.ubi.com/US/Games/Screenshots.htm?pId=1045&sId=6880

Anyway, as for the ship having katakana, dunno. Lots of signs in Japan use it for even Japanese words or Japanese companies. It is not always for just words from other countries. I could only speculate that from a distance it might be easier to identify, but I'm sure it probably has another explanation.

Will Pacific Fighters be a "stand alone" game or if we have AEP will the game be added as another expansion?

Also release date, I understand that it is to be released sometime in the fall. Is this still the plan? Are you on schedule?

Lastly, does Pacific Fighters have its own web site? If so what is the web site addy?

Thank you.

Salute!

quote:
The Japanses write ship names in Katakana. This system is indeed used to write foreign words but this practice did not begin until after WWII. The use of katakana to transcribe foreign words did not become standard until after WWII. To expand on the ship naming thread... if you take a look at the "ai marking" website (unusal name but the Japanese gentleman who runs the site makes the most incredible 3D models of WWII ships) you can see a digital image of a Yamato model with the name of the ship at stern written in Hiragana. I think I've also seen some photos of Japanese Destroyer wrecks with the name written in Hiragana at stern.

I would tend to agree with a previous poster that the Japanese Destroyers may have had their names written in Katakana on each side of the ship to ease with identification. The destroyers, after all, would have had many within the same class that looked identical... whereas a battleship like Fuso or Yamato (names not written on flanks) is not easily misidentified by a sailor familiar with their profile.

At any rate... here's the link to the modeller's site.

http://w2322.nsk.ne.jp/qm.masaki/images/y119.jpg

I encourage you to explore his site... he's currently working on an IJN Aircraft Carrier that looks absolutely incredible.

Why don't they use anti-aliasing when taking the screenshots? I assume they use maximum quality levels in all other respects, so why not this? I think it would vastly improve the look of the game, and considering the whole point of these updates is to sell the next product, why wouldn't they try to make it look as good as possible?
