IL-2 in perfect mode is still very slow. This has been the case in all previous Catalyst versions, with minor differences.

So, is this really a driver related problem or is the game just very demanding when using the finer ground textures and objects?

Anybody...?

This game is quite intensive on 2.0 pixel shaders. ATi has stated that Cat 4.6 have improved PS 2.0 performance. I hope this is across the board, not just for X800 cards!

What kind of card have you got?

I've gone back to Cat 4.2.

Seems to give me the best performance so far on my 9800 pro. Had some strange flashing on Cat 4.6 in FB.

'Perfect' is also very playable IMO on Cat 4.2 with custom settings somewhere between performance and quality.

I've got a 9800PRO. I get decent FPS in perfect mode when AA & AF are disabled, but even at 2xAA & 4xAF there are occasionally some real bad slowdowns, and I value AA & AF higher than perfect beauty...

I had to reformat just before the AEP came out so I installed the Catalyst 4.1s (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-catalyst-7-97-031212a-013118c.exe) that are listed in the readme. I was getting very good performance and visuals (everything maxed with a 9800 Pro), but it's never enough! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

I got the C6 'hacked' 4.5s from the Check-Six site and saw a reasonable performance drop, as well as a degredation in texture quality and AA. I rolled back to the 4.1s and to be honest they seem even better than they were before. I've noticed better performance and visuals on other games too, DX not just OGL.

That said, if there's one thing we can be sure about with graphics drivers, it's that different people with different specs (and sometimes even with the same!) experience wildly differing results even with the same driver set.

Just my two cents... I'm sticking with these bad boys until ATi put a big flashing banner across their site saying "GUARANTEED BEST IL-2 PERFORMANCE EVER!"

My new 9800Pro is doing well with the 4.1 drivers.

I'm still finding the balance between FPS and quality. I can run at 1600x1200x32 with 4XAA & AF, but I have to turn the terrain all the way down. And though the dogfights look great!, I can't have more than a very few planes up.

At 1024x768x32, I can max everything but the Perfect terrain, have 4X AA & AF, and have a good ground pounder flight with several planes in the air.

At 1024x768x16, with AF & AA at 2X, and most details medium to max, then I can have a frikkin' war without having a slideshow. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I just love my 9800Pro. Can't wait for the new CPU in a week or two.
