On cockpit-optional servers, how do people utilize external views? I'm not asking the keys but do people fly entirely from an external POV, or perhaps just pop into the cockpit long enough to engage and pop back out? Or are they using padlocks all the time? What the common technique for taking advantage of the external views? TIA

People usually turn to external view when they black out because blacking out doesn't effect the outside view.
Server hosts are usually torn on whether to enable externals because on one hand it allows this exploit but on the other hand, they allow players to watch dogfights on their way to the target/dogfight.
And shame on you for asking for an exploit! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Perhaps a spectate option would be a welcome addition?

External views I used mostly to help me clear my own six (since most dogfight servers its hard to find reliable wingmen - or even teammates) and to help me taxi on crowded runways (where in reality you'd have a groundcrew sitting on the wings giving directions).

One of the things I like about FB is that when you black out...even with externals you loose control... so they make you aware but are not a real advantage in a blackout situation. I use externals when available..... I think most people do when they are available whether they admit it or not and I dont consider it a cheat unless it is something I can do that no one else can do...but I have found that trying to evade a determined attacker using externals for anything more than a quick look over your shoulder.... like a real combat pilot might have looked over his shoulder for SA ...is suicide. No way can you keep your orientation for long against a pilot who knows his plane, is fixated on you, and is a good shot unless you too are focused on your FLYING and not HIS flying. I get shot down all the time in HL but anybody who has shot me down will tell you.... I gave them a run...and I wasnt looking out the window much either... I was watching my altitude, attitude, speed etc... and trying to d=save my virtual butt...

A quick F3 pretty much is reason enough to disable external view if you are going for more realistic settings. Really, the only reason I allow external view is to accommodate the AI flyables. If they had cockpits, external view would be off for sure.

It sure would be nice to have a spectator view system though.

ditto

In fact ... well, even with the external views I still have trouble taxiing by myself so, on a crowded runway? ... look you don't want to know <_< ... but in case you DO want to know, you might wanna look at that lil accident (english version) (http://a.domaindlx.com/Yukiel/BF_comic2_english.JPG)( Original version (http://a.domaindlx.com/Yukiel/BF_comic2_german.JPG))

You know, just had an idea for servers with players that know each other and can get along. They could let somebody sit in TB~3 and use chat or something to run the airfield. I guess this is silly, but anyway the TB~3 could help in airfield defense (well, okay just a little bit anyway).

I'll be honest... because I don't think other people are being completely open about how much they use external views in online play.

I use externals _all the time_. Sitting in the cockpit for 3 minutes on route to target is boring as hell. Instead, I like to cycle through external views of friendly and enemy a/c to see what they're up to. There might be a dogfight going on which might be worth a quick look.

When I get near to target I often switch to F2 view and pan with the mouse so that I can spot for enemy a/c.

Soon as I see a target I'm back in the cockpit and I start preparing for combat.

I look around in-cockpit using the hatswitch on my joystick.

If I lose the target I switch to F3 flyby mode to see if I can spot where he went. Likewise if I get a bandit on my six I start alternating between cockpit and flyby mode so that I can roll, turn or change altitude at the right moment.

People may say... oh that's sooooo unrealistic... but I think external views help compensate for the weak situational awareness you get when looking at a VDU monitor as opposed to looking out of a window in a real plane.

That said there are lots of people who play full real and I'm starting to get into that... it is very challenging... but the interiors of planes are not as good to look at as the exteriors and I find the confinement a bit uninspiring.

Exactly Hux..... Plus like I said, You cant evade an attacker for long using just externals.... especially down low....either he nails you or you crash..... I think a closed pit with externals is a decent server. This sim is so beautiful that externals make the whole experience that much more rewarding..... especially after you have hit the dirt.

how is externals any different than ww-veiw? if you bounce into someones low 6 they shouldn't be able to see you. Alot of people complained about hearing a plane from too far away, and that got fixed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif , but you don't want blind spots? I do agree that the fly-by's are really cool, and i use them all the time offline, but online it offers too many ways to take advantage of it.
Just a noob perspective...
