I found this pic in a book with as legend, P38J cockpit... I was looking for a cockpit reference because i still have problems identifying some instruments in game.

But as you can see, there is much differences between this cockpit and the one we have in game.

When i tried to find some cockpit pics on the net, i came across several different cockpits, but with no references to the model it came from.

So i wonder if this cockpit is really a P38J cockpit, if it is, why is it so different from the one in game. They could have changed the instrument panel arrangement between two J sub models, i don't know. As i don't know, i ask if someone else know. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its cos this game is a arcade cartoon and nothing is in the slightest bit realistic.

That actually looks more like a G or H cockpit, if not that, then a VERY early J. Note that the front of the canopy is curved like in earlier models, and there is a internal slab of armored glass inside the cockpit. The instruments are also of the earlier style as well. It also has the gunsight from the H and earlier models.

Most likely a picture of the J prototypes because the wheel isn't the later style either, but it doesn't show much of the wheel - could be earlier than a G, if that's the case.

Thx korolov, i will continue to search cockpit infos about the P38... I can see here that this version have two sets of gauges, one for each engine, while the one we have only have one set for rpm and manifold pressure...

I probably need to look for some more books about this plane http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, I e-mailed Oleg about that and he gave me a snarky reply like "RE:SPAM I recommend you to look for P-38 flight manual." No, spam was not my subject line, that was his.

Anyway, I had seen the twin gauges on the earlier P-38s and so I thought that the game was wrong, but I didn't know that the later one has two gauges rolled into one with dual needles. I actually like the older way better.

Yes benny, same for me, i prefer to have distinct gauges, so a rapid glance at gauges tell me i have a problem, what engine is damaged, and how badly... Actually, i still have to check wich one is smoking http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We also seem to be missing things in our game P-38 cockpit. I was looking for the hand pump for the backup hydraulics. Where did it go? Did they remove it in later versions, or what?

I think the thing to remember is the pit we have in FB represents a L or a late J, and can't represent any earlier variants. It's pretty accurate if you compare pictures of the L and late J cockpits to it.

EDIT: Also, BIG cockpit pic of a P-38L, if in slightly poor condition:

Thx korolov, yes it look like what we have... I hope pacific fighter will include F and either G or H versions.. But for the moment, i'm quite happy with the J version... I never liked the L, don't ask me why, maybe because i'm not that fond of the metal color. I prefer the painted planes personnally.
