Can anyone explain the advantages and disadvantages between the different Spitfire IXs? If you don't feel like explaining at least point me toward a good spitfire site that will.

Basically, the Mk.IXe has a couple of .50 cals instead of 4 .303s. Clipped wings as an option for both armaments.

Spitfire IX is:
- Faster
- Climbs faster
- Retains its manuverability from previous versions
- Has better armament options (C and E types both have twice as much cannon ammo and either .303 or .50 cal options)
- FB game version also has provisions for droptanks and bombs which is certainly new in the Spitfire department

Going from memory, you're right; the IXe included two 20mm canon and two 0.5in mg's. It was an urgent fix to deal with the 190 threat.

The IXc and e were upgrade from the Vb, and included the more powerful Merlin 61 and 63 engine, a 4-bladed prop and an increased area rudder for increased control area/manueverabilty. High alt performance was better. The Vb's and c's had the Merlin 45 and 50, I believe.

The wing area was not changed with the IX, but the fuselage was lengthened about 1-1/2 feet.

All in all, the IX offered better climb, increased agility, much more firepower and faster level flight.

In reality, the changeover to the IX took place in stages, with some V's modified during production followed by a non-stop series of changes.

Short answers: IX was faster and better. The "e" was more heavily armed than the "c."

The FMs in the patch are consistent, IMO.

IXC ---has the C wing, with 4 30cal and 2 20mm
IXE ---has the E wing, with 2 .50 cal and 2 20mm
CW = Clipped wing, for improved roll rate
L.F. = Supercharger gearing optimised for low altitude performance
H.F. = Supercharger gearing optimised for high-altitude performance
