K Class Airships and the larger ZPG-2N airships were used by the US Navy in World War 2.
The K Airships alone made 55,900 operational flights with 550,000 hours in the sky.
During the War 89,000 surface ships were escorted by K Airships and not a single one was lost to enemy submarines.
K Class Airships carried on board Radar, Sonarbuey's, MAD, Depth Charges, Contact Bombs, a Machinegun and in later part of the War... Homing Torpedoes.
Powered with two 800 Hp engines the K Class was able to cruise at 50 to 80 Mph.
A duration of a mission could last 30 to 40 Hours in the air. With refueling at Sea... which could be done from a ship.

Thank's... the History Channel just had a story on the Airship L-8 or 7 that had appeared back over land from a 4 Hr mission over San Francisco Bay with two of it's crew members missing.
Good story... one member might have fallen out of the airship checking out a oil slick in the Bay...that they had just reported sighting.
The pilot falling out while attempting rescue.
