What an excellent program!

Now, if its functionality would be combined with =RU=Youss' IL-2 Compare and made part of IL-2:Forgotten Battle..

How many complains and controversies would have been avoided.
It would bring all necessary information about planes performance right there on a surface. If something found questionable or wrong - it could have been much easier to prove and fix.

Oleg, do you hear?

D/L'd great stuff !!

thanks

just one itsy teenie weenie point i noticed

LaGG series 4 should read 2 x 12.7mm mg not 1 x 12.7mm

please don't take this as a pathetic petty complaint: i
just thought the author might want to know (in the name of accuracy) ( this mistake may well be in FB itself)

thank you once again /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If he's really hearing, let's also ask that Uberdemon's UQMG be included, possibly as a replacement for the standard QMB, which by now is just a not-so-smart dogfight creator.

fluke39
09-15-2003, 04:02 PM
ignore the Lagg bit of my last post i guess it's one of the many inaccuracies in FB itself.

two further points however

1)However amazing i think the UQMG is)(and i do) i think directly replacing it with the QMB would not be the best move - not everyone is blessed with average intelligence - whereas i could figure the QMB out straight away it took me a while to figure out the UQMG - and indeed even though i have not given it much time i still can't figure it all out ( and not saying this makes me intelligent but i have done a degree in computing too !/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif )
perhaps it could be replaced - but with a revision of the interface and perhaps some simpler functions) i'm sure some of those who have FB just like to click a few buttons and then start blasting)

perhaps some combination of the two interfaces would be good

2) can someone tell me what the "match" function is for in the aircraft viewer - as far as i can tell all it does is bring up the identical aircraft at the other side of the viewer - surely not so we can compare two identical aircraft- ?? sorry but i don't understand this bit - can anyone help?

Read the ReadMe that comes with the program.

It saves time scrolling; If you want to compare different versions of the same model, you can bring it up on one side, then hit 'match' to bring it up on the other side. From there you only have one or two clicks to get to the other aircraft.

I have not downloaded it nor will I. To me, the object files are of limited usage. It's not going to give you speed/alt spectrums or overheat timings. When I do my comparisons, it's from hand crafted data obtained from measurements while the sim is running. Why do I say watch out for Trojans? Just beacuse someuse typed this in all caps --**00OO HARDBALL'S AIRCRAFT VIEWER NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD! OO00**--

Guys!

Don't be so quick to flame RBJ, he has a point. The fact that the title of the post is in Caps is a good indication of Trojans in the software. Don't you know that most virus scanning software like Mcafee etc just search for file names in Caps.

I have torn the caps lock key of my keyboard incase I accidentally hit it and create some Uber virus that downloads the planet onto my hard-drive and reformats it.

Take care out there

RayBanJockey,

Do you think anything you don't say?

Apparently not.

You've really over-stepped your bounds on this one

Do you see how much trouble you've caused here just making that idiotic statement?
It was totally unfounded and based on nothing more than your obvious paranoia of Trojans/Viruses
But to make things worse you completely neglected to mention what it was that you were basing this delusionaly paranoid statement on.

Additionally, I've read some of your other posts regarding these type of things where you've stated that we should all "just reinstall Windows every 2 months or so" rather than use Ad Aware and simply add the sites found in Ad Aware to our restricted sites list in EI

My conclusion...

You're a complete idiot.

Here's my recommendation to you:

In the future when you feel like posting a warning to people about a file being virused you haven't even DL'd yet
Take the next step first and DL it then scan it to see if the virus that the voices in your head warned you about because of the BIG LETTERS, are actually present first. Then warn us

Thx

Now I think you owe this man an apology

P.S.

I voted for Killjoy /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

This is incredible. I'm with EURO Snoopy and JerseyD on this.

I'd better just explain that this is only directed at the er, people who seem untrusting of Hardball's work,(just in case of any "yawn" misunderstanding).

Hardball creates a great utility for us, provides it as a free download and what does he get for his time and trouble? "The title of the thread is using capital letters therefore the software must be riddled with viruses" (or something to that effect). There's gratitude for you! Don't you think that is stretching things a bit far, even for this forum?

Reading some of these posts it would appear that some of these untrusting souls are not using any form of anti-virus software. If they were they probably wouldn't be so paranoid.

As well as ANTI-VIRUS software there are also ADWARE utilities, SPYWARE utilities, POP-UP killers and FIREWALLS amongs others. If the ones that need periodically updating are kept updated then you shouldn't have a problem, and certainly not from Hardball.

I apologise for all the capital letters above, as simply by reading the above paragraph you have automatically downloaded five trojans and other assorted viruses. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I don't know Hardball, he comes in and types in all caps DOWNLOAD THIS NOW. What is any careful computer user supposed to think?

So anyway you guys are overeacting and yes, I reformat every 6 months at least and never use adware (it's actually spyware itself) or anti-virus (rip-off).

In fact, just to show that there are no hard feelings, I'm going to download this proggy now, and that is saying something because I have never downloaded anything for IL2/FB ever (except HL and the patch).

Excuse me? I thought Freycinet was the originator of this thread and in any case he only said that it was AVAILABLE for download. I don't think he actually issued an order.

- What is any careful computer user supposed to think?

Is it worth braving the incidious evils of capital letters in order to acquire a great piece of software maybe?

Oh come on now RBJ, were you hit over the head with a capital letter as a baby or something? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well that's your perogative.

Well adware in general is quite irritating so I wouldn't be surprised, but if you mean Ad-aware then would you care to back that up with proof?

- or anti-virus (rip-off).

Rip-off?? Please explain. Also, it is plain stupidity to frequently access the internet without an anti-virus application running. This is especially so if your machine has a permanent connection such as cable. I would have expected any careful computer user such as yourself to be aware of that. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

- In fact, just to show that there are no hard

Please do. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it. Personally, I think it is extremely useful, well put together, very easy to use, VIRUS FREE, and even the readme file is well written and easy to understand. Not that you'd need it as the program's interface is so intuitive it's untrue. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

P.S.
Please don't be frightened of the caital letters RBJ. I ran them through my "rip-off" anti-virus software and they're quite safe /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Yes I have had Norton 90 day introductory offers, but then when it expires they want you to go to their site and give them money! So I said "Well let's see how long it takes for me to get a virus before I start funneling Norton a monthly fee" And in the meantime my computer won't be hassled by Norton status either. Well low and behold I have had a computer for 6 years and never had a virus! My Grandma and Grandpa have got viruses before, but that's because they probably click too many things.

BTW the link to the file, it isn't working. Hopefully later.

God you guys need to calm down!

Hardball wasn't the one who offered the download ok the guy who did has over 3000 posts on this board but I have seen trojans and viruses spread like this many times on boards.

And yes they involved lots of caps lock and look here signs as well. The culprit would use a logon name almost identical to that of a popular poster and the difference would only be noticeable if you looked long and hard at the name.

People get so excited by the prospect of downloading the latest patch/new tool whatever and get stuck with a virus, if RBJ feels like typing something like that then let him and just choose to ignore him.

If you really believe anti-virus software will save you then dream on!

I could knock up a trojan in half an hour that would give me access to your computer and it would get through any virus detector.

You can easily patch an executable and a trojan together in to one .exe and you are set. I used to do this to play jokes on my flatmates all the time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And no I didn't destroy their stuff I scared them a little by controlling their system and then told them it was me and removed it from their computers.

I thought that the majority of IL2 players were of a mature age but some of the language here belongs on a Counter Strike board.

I'm expeting to get flamed now for playing practical jokes on my flatmates and expect to be told to go play CS too.

Well, with RBJ there's nothing one can do. He's always been just a negative and destructive presence on this board. He sems to thrive on it, especially when he can mess things up for people that try to offer something to the community.

The big problem here is the moderation. Why let a slandering message such as RBJ's stand? - Is anybody just allowed to baselessly accuse others of peddling viruses?

Ubi and this moderation is just spitting the community in the face by allowing this. Not very friendly to people like Hardball, who are doing so much for this sim.

All I would like to know is...
Does it give you rotating 3D views of the aircraft?
Can it show you what a skin design will look like on a particular aircraft without having to launch the game?

I have a dabble at making my own skins but I would like to preview them on the 3D model without launching the game.

If this proggy can do this then it will be in my download queue.

As for viruses.
Ignorance is bliss.
If you have no virus protection you will never know you have one and thus will think you are safe even if everybody in your addy book is being spammed by you without your knowledge because of a worm virus that your ignorance tells you you don't have.
You simply are not safe without a decent firewall and Virus protection.

You can format your PC and do a clean install of XP and gaurenteed within 2 minutes of being connected to the net, your PC will be shut down by the RPC vulnerability and without a firewall you will also have a lovely virus installed onto your PC. Without VP you will not know.

Sorry Ray but VP is something you need.

I don't use Norton because it is system hoggy and the active virus protection makes programs take longer to launch (particularly FB!). I use AVG which is free and has active VP but doesn't impinge too much on your system.
Programs launch quicker than they do than with Norton.

RBJ's words:

I don't see any slander here at all. Perhaps a lack of politeness, or may be a deliberate provocation. Either way if it seems like a silly comment then just ignore it! Don't over-react and then whine at the moderators (who actually explicitly dis'ed RBJ anyway!)

Not true. If I had not responed to this thread and warned people of a potential security risk, then a bunch of hypersensitive people would have not attacked me, and kept bumping it to the top. The title of this post would have gone shouting into the abyss. So because of me, more people know about the Aircraft Viewer!

No, you said watch out for trojans. Important difference. Anti virus can usually protect you from a virus infection but software with trojan functionality built in is more insidious, and a growing threat.

I have used this app for a long time and know it to be safe, reliable and from a reputable source.

Sometimes if you know nothing about a subject (as you yourself have said you have never heard of the aircraft viewer before) it's better to say nothing.

Freycinet, I appreciate your concern for the forum and your desire for everybody to hold hands and sing coombaya, but you have to understand when you you post long titles with all caps some people aren't going to be in such a good mood when they open it. Thanks for the heads up there Xnomad. I would never have guessed that anti-virus software would have trouble detecting a virus that hasn't been written yet. You know as well as I do that any a/v software is only as good as the definitions it uses. That's why the definitions should be updated regularly. That said, any protection is better than none.

The head-to-head comparison of all relevant aspects of FB planes is really invaluable for anyone wanting to learn about the pros and cons of the planes in this sim.

To whoever asked about seeing the aircraft skins. Well, it is not difficult to keep a copy of FB running in the background of photoshop or whatever, and then just check the skins continously...

I have to correct you on 2 points Ray.

Tens of thousands of people worldwide have been having their PC's shut down (those that have XP without latest critical updates) by the RPC vulnerability.
If you haven't you have been extremely lucky!
Norton won't protect against this. It's a security hole, not a virus, but it leaves a door open for a virus.
A decent firewall can plug this hole or the relevent Critical Update for XP.
Don't you follow the news?
Didn't you see that fat teenager who used this exploit get busted?

Saying you haven't had anybody say you spammed them with a potential worm virus shows your ignorance. Worm viruses can be clever in covering their tracks. They can make themselves appear to be from someone else. They can use any address in your address book to make it look like they were the sender.
If someone receives a worm virus from you, chances are they won't know it's from you.
The only way they will know is if they delve into the mail message header which frankly nobody does.

If you get a virus you will format?
Well that's great if you like wasting your time.
While your formatting I'm shooting 'aces' down from the 'RBJ school of Flying' LOL

Like I said. Ignorance is bliss, and you must be blissfully happy thinking you have a safe system.

Really? I suggest you think again there. Before I clicked on this thread! I thought the Titles with---**OOOOO COME AND GET IT!!! looked a bit suspect! like a spammer uses, or someone itching to spread there latest vile. So many are unconcerned about Virus, trojans! they don't even know what they are!

RBJ offered good advice! but could have typed "ON THIS ONE" he could have typed "ON EVERY DOWNLOAD!" But the way this was presented justifies his "ON THIS ONE". and after all he is the one an only RBJ. who has reached Cult status on this board. I think adding some much needed colour to the boring Grey Ubisoft default scheme!

SO I say Bump this thread, If it's a good program! Not that I need to compare any planes! or Bump this thread so more people become more aware how trojans /Virus easily spread using the "Come and get the Hot download, Approach!" or just bump the thread to increase RBJ's Cult status points by 1.235 !! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
