View Full Version : Hello Ivan! Could you suggest it to Oleg?

I think it will not change much, just an output parament. see the picture

http://www2.uufriends.com/images/upload/907000/mclan2004041223002666_big.jpg

You will see the difference in the picture obviously, which will make all marks not look like a strange paper and will match the skin's light effect.

only two line paraments in output mat files:
Ambient 1.0-->0.9
Specular 0.0-->0.6

and also make the TGA path to a folder in game, which we can change them to our favorate marks.

Thanks very much

A slight opacity drop so that it didn't look like a sticker would help, too.

Would mean more work, though.

Just adjust the two paraments, you will find the difference at once. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I really hate the sticker marks, I really suprised that the game graphic engin was already able to reach a better effect.

You know, this is one of the worst visual effects of the game. IL2Mat by Aces helps quite abit by adding splotchy (Is that a real word?) effects which help to conceal the way markings are applied to planes in the game, but the truth is that the markings still look like they are hovering over the skin, and not part of it.

I am really surprised, given all the really nice eye candy in the game, that this hasnt been addressed a long time ago. Perhaps in BoB. I have a lot of really high hopes for this sim, and equally hope that it isnt just IL2 with more poly counts for planes.

Perhaps Oleg will rethink this for BoB.

If it's a layer on skin, that must be find some different. but they can improve it indeed.

Now there are only several paraments in the mat files which we can change. I belive there will not be a hard work for Oleg team to change or edit some paraments for all output mat files, these effect paraments is same for all mat files.

I totally support Aces' work. but as I said, there are still many many mat files which are produced randomlly and can't mod it.

How are you making the change? It looks much better...heck it may make the RAF roundels look like the proper color of blue that they are instead of the much brighter color that they currently are.

Re Mat files, see here and learn about what is mat. Ace has done a great work for FB.

I only mod the light effect and use those nice emblems from ACE's IL2-MAT. Now I don't use wethered numbers and bakens from IL2-MAT. Personally, these will be kept very clear and new by ground crew in history which I read from most of history photos, because it's the ID of an aircraft.

Yeah that bugs me too. Some of the newer planes such as the P-40 (USA markings only), P-38 (USA markings only) and P-47 (also USA markings only) have much better nation insignia's that look like they are part of the skin. But the numbers and unit emblems still look very fake. It would be very nice if they updated all markings on all planes so they look like they are part of the skin rather than a decal.

Hi Mc_Wolf,

This is fantastic, thanks for posting. But do I assume correctly that for IL2 Mat to make these changes automatically, each MAT file in the CoopRegT folder must be manually edited? (I understand that certain regiment insignia are applied randomly.) Also, do you know if there's a way to lower opacity, as PlaneEater suggests above?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi GregSM

Some reference in MAT file:

For All marking before AEP
[LightParams]
Ambient 0.85
Diffuse 0.9
Specular 0.55
SpecularPow 0

For ROA marking, because the default marking is two bright.
For JAP marking too.
[LightParams]
Ambient 0.8
Diffuse 0.5
Specular 0.55
SpecularPow 0
Shine 0.0

I suggest use UltraEdit to replace all these easily.

You can load the mat files by IL2-Mat or copy these moded mat file to IL-2 Shturmovik Stab\Hakenkreuz folder. Now I use the second way.

I only use the IL2-Mat's great emblems for Germany aircrafts, others are default one. As I said before, these marks will be kept very clean and oftenly painted to keep new by ground crew in history which I read from most of history photos, because it's the ID of an aircraft in that time.

But if the dev team can add some light, weathered effect on the TGA files, such as scratched mark, oil mark etc, it will be very cool. I worry about it, there are many many TGA files in game.

Make FB better!!! We all love it and wish it perfect!

Again

You can only moded these mat files by yourself now.

That's why finally I told to Ace it will only be changed by dev team. many many random mat files are automaticilly by game. Preloading too many mat files will slow down the game loading, especially when use many 3d-party tga files.

Re lower opacity
In [layer#]
tfBlendAdd 0-->1 only opacity not lower
If the dev team can lower 5%-10% opacity, it will be great, the panel line will affect the uper TGA file and make it real.

Hi Mc_Wolf,

Thank you very much. I'll enjoy tinkering with this.

I hope with you that the developers see fit to adjust the opacity, as I figure this would improve appearances significantly. Thanks again for drawing attention to this rather neglected graphic aspect.

Hi All,

Well done McWolf, as you know I've been working away with MATs and TGAs for over two years without and assistance or even recognition from the game developers. I have frequently e-mailed them without any replies and recently, as a last resort I started the two petitions on SimHQ and here on this board.

I know that there are many who would very much like to see markings improved and that's why I've spent thousands of hours editing thousands of MAT files, producing TGA files and of course IL2-MAT Manager to help folks select these markings as easily as possible.

I think that the new effect looks great and I'll experiment with editing my MAT files and probably include them in the next release of MAT Manager. A couple of points that I'd like to come back on. The latest version of IL2-MAT loads all MAT files very fast and reliably, it's undergoing beta testing still. I've been loading nearly ten thousand MAT files on program launch for nearly two years without any appreciable delay in loading. Secondly,as you know the TGA files NEVER get copied and it doesn't matter how many of them there are, it's the MAT files that get copied to the Cache folder. Another point that you made is correct that the game creates "randomly" named MATs for USAAF, British, Luftwaffe bomber/twin-engined fighter/stuka units and it's this point that I'd most love some help on from Oleg and his team. The way forward as I've mentioned to you before, is to have IL2-MAT Manager generate its own MAT files and we are working to this end on the next generation of the program.

Best Regards

Aces

BTW: watch the colorscale parameter as it isn't allways ColorScale 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 , setting this to your value in all MATS will, I believe cause you to loose colours in, for example VVS numbers. The colorscale parameter represents values of Red Green and Blue in the graphic as explained on my MAT & TGA files tutorial.

Hi Michael,

Thanks, watch out for the colourscale poarameter, I've edited my previous post

What I mean is that lowering the colorscale values as you described is fine except that when the colorscale values aren't 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 will change the colour so in these cases the value should be lowered by an equal percentage eg. the RGB values changed to produce a darker colour. I think that this value for coloured numbers is best left unchanged.

Hi Michael,

Yes, white colour is fine, it will work ok on my LW numbering MATs as well as I've used different TGAs and therefore the colour of these isn't dependant on the colorscale parameter but some of my VVS numbering MATs would be effected.

Hi all,

I have just uploaded a new file download containing all of my MAT files for IL2-MAT Manager but edited to include an exciting discovery by McWolf.

These MATs incorporate changes to the lighting parameters and I think that they look much better that the default settings. Please BACKUP your existing CoopRegt folder before installing in case that you wish to go back to the proevious versions.

You will also need to toggle your options in IL2-MAT Manager to copy the new files into your main CoopRegt folder. Thanks to Micheal (McWolf) for his work on this very interesting and exciting discovery. If these prove popular I will replace the MAT files included with IL2-MAT Manager with these in future releases.
