I was hoping that Oleg would have changed the look of some of the tracers in the new patch. Anyway I wanted to say that some of the tracers, the American 50 cal especially are not modeled accurately. For starters it seems that the tracer start burning a good ways after it has left the barrel when in fact the tracer starts burning inside the barrel from the instant that it is fired. The pilots would see the tracer as a long streak as it initially came out of the barrel. In the game as I said earlier it doesn't become visible until after it has left the barrel. Also the brightness of the 50 cal tracers is not enough. I know my tracers because I have been in the military(covert ops) for a long time and have fired many different types of tracers from many different countries. The 50 cal would burn very brightly so that you could see them very well. In the game you cannot see them very well. Also when you fire at targets you bullets bounce of. In the game the only things that I have seen bullets bounce off of are IL-2 aircarft. Bullets would bounce off of many things especially the ground when you shoot at it. In fact one of the tactics used by Allied pilots during the war to kill tanks was to shoot directly in front of them and bounce the bullets up underneath the tank to kill it where the armor was the thinnest. I think it would be great to see this modeled in the game. It would add a lot to the immersion. If anyone would be interested I have movies this from some actual footage from the war. You can e-mail me at brad111@ptd.net if you have any direct questions. I would be more than happy to answer them. WW2 combat aviation is my passion.

I would like the 50cal's to be a bit more visible.

My sentiments exactly. However, I dont like the fact that you can see tracers from miles away, especially when in bad weather!!!

I would agree fully.I will shoot the ground or the tanks for instance the rounds seem to go striaght into the tank.No bouncey here!!So yes the 50's need to be address.

One thing I noticed about the .50 cals is that before, when i had a GeForce 4, they were kinda hard to see. Now that i have a Radeon 9800 Pro, they look brighter and are easier to see. So, maybe try adjusting your colors and see if that helps any.

I do agree that they are not as easy to see as the other tracers, but it's not really that big of a deal, they are still visible.

I've found their visibility to have been increased but they are definately very good at disappearing.

Apparently its partly the game engines fault but I don't think it would hurt to up the size of the tracer just a bit to counteract that bug.

The .303 cal brownings have the same red tracer as the .50's. The thing I want to say is that having watched much actual combat footage from the BoB etc, gun camera records, etc...the .303 tracers I saw were smoke tracers much like the LW 20mm tracers as modelled in IL-2, complete with vortices.

If I had all the money I'd spent on drink..I'd spend it on drink!

since you guys are already on topic for another post I made. read below

I made a quick and dirty table of my own from the data on http://free-st.hinet.hr/dvd/Weapons.html
because I wanted to see if their was any obvous convention that countries used for Tracer fire.

However this data seems to have been taken directly out of Forgotten Battles so I was wondering if anybody has any primary sources that are published on the internet??

I too want to see tracers that look more real and less like star wars lasers. That is not to say I do not appreciate the game as it is though.

the .50s definatly should not look like lines but alot thicker and more visable, .303s and .50 all are the same and whatevers on the p11, i dunno but should look different

I do like the effect of the vortices for the smoke trails but they all look exactly the same. Some of the tracers left a perfect looking corkscrew pattern and others did not. If there could be some kind of variation it would make it a lot neater and more realistic. Some of the tracers smoke trails would break up a little bit and it seemed that no two smoke trails looked exactly the same. Seeing the same thing all of the time gets boring.
I also have to stress the fact that we need tracers to bounce off of stuff other than the IL2 aircraft. I would like to see tracers bounce off of things when you shoot at other things as well, espacially the ground. Wouldn't it be great to be shooting at a ground target or a low flying aircaft and seeing you bullets bouncing off of the ground all around it? It would make the game even more immersive and realistic.
