I need some pointers for using rockets against bombers. I end up using all my rockets and not one hits the bomber im at fairly close range too. i would say about 100 feet from them. rockets im testing with are the RS-82's on I-16's for practice.

you need to set the delay so they explode near the target reardless of whether they actually hit or not

delay time will depend on the range you want to fire them from .. i fyou are firing very close set it to 1 or 2 seconds

Don't forget to adjust your convergence of the rockets, make it very close so they both hit together, and shoot up high they tend to arc big time. I've nailed one Heinkel with rockets from my P-47, took a week of trying but I got one eventually. If you dive down and treat your target like a ship at sea leading it a little it tends to work better then level rocket attacks.

It's extremely gratifying to dive into a formation of HE-111's or other heavy to medium type bombers and loosen a few rockets up their exhaust pipes...usually just blows them up in one hit /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I've taken out entire flightgroups (including myself) doing this.

i just tried and i managed to knock a few down using the convergence http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

i use 700m convergence and 1.2 sec delay. it seems to work really well, and at those settings, you can fire intuitively, firing as close or a little farther than what you would shoot your mg's at (note: 700m convergence doesn't mean to shoot at 700m, i only use that so i get a wide dispersion in case of a miss, or [preferably] hit both wings on a good shot.)
but it seems that you will most likely need a direct hit to take down a bomber, and even then it won't blow it into pieces. however, fighters are a whole different story, and i haven't figured them out yet; if i get one with rockets it's usually out of luck.

true, true, it's all about manuverability and size

Rocket delay at 3-4 seconds is best. At 100 meters you should be hitting the bombers. At 300 meters close is good enough although I've hit from that range on stuka's.
I set mine on a 400 meter convergence, and a 4 second delay.

To get the bombers especially in an I-16 remember practice is one thing but in game they shoot back. 100 meters and following is not acceptable especially when trying to line up a rocket shot.

Climb up behind them, and off to one side helps. That way you can look out your right front cockpit and keep them in sight. Once your at least 300m above them, and around 300m behind them. Pull a nice roll over onto their 6 which if done right is easy. It keeps them in view the whole time so you can line up perfectly.
You'll be closing beyond convergence range and you want that. Pick a point about an aircraft length ahead of them (bomber aircraft length ahead of them). This is an imaginary point mind you it's basically a guess. Fly straight at this point. Of course it will be changing but hold the point. As you close your speed increases in the dive, and the andlge makes you a harder target for gunners. Plus they won't be killing you the pilot all the time either.

Around 200 meters and closing holding your sights on the point ahead of them, and inline with their fuselage...FIRE! lol

This gives you a great target! It's a low deflection shot at the easiest to hit spot on bombers which is their wings. If done right the rickets should impact at the wing roots on both wings. Which is bad anyway but also where the fuel tanks in just about every bomber are located.
Enjoy the fireball as they explode pull up, and do the same to the next one.

If your trying to hit Stuka's vs HE-111 it's a little trickier. I come up from below and basically try to chop their tail off with my prop (get really close). When they're so close I just about can't see anything else I fire, and pull as hard as I can on the elevator without snapping into a spin.

Always go for the lead Stuka first as it sometimes ruins their bomb run. Anyway with a set of 6 rockets I can normally get a couple of Stuka's or a few HE-111. In campaigns in the I-16. It takes practice though.

I've also hit fighter with rockets, but it was just luck. A quick guess deflection as he dove away. The rockets converged right on top of him, and boom!

Happy bomber hunting. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
