Erm - good question - i always get confused when it comes to spitfire marks - if i recall correctly i think some mk IX's had pointy wings ( i think HF means pointy wings and LF means clipped wings)- but i think quite possibly it was a HF VIII (as more than 1,600 mk VIII's were produced) - it was a unpressurised version of the Mk VII of which only 140 were produced

anyway if i'm wrong i'm sure someone more in the know will correct me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

So was this written during the war or after? They certainly hvae alot of information about the aircraft for a war document. I guess thats what intelligence is all about...its just very impressive!

Thanks for posting!

- 'Aircraft Recognition Journal' was published once a month - starting in September 1942 - -so this months scan/journal was published in Feb '44 and was intended to..(you guessed it!) aid recognition of aircraft - t'was given to all armed services (british) and to the O.C. - it may appear they know alot but if you compare dates of when a certain model of plane came into service and when it is mentioned in the journal it is literaly many months behind - especially when mentioning details of allied types.

i'm surprised no-ones mentioned the "provisional" drawing of the Inline Fw190 - i think thats really cool - one of the first public mentions of one of the reichs finest prop fighters...

anyhow - here are some more scans from February '44s issue.....

(if i've got the code right - if not you may have to wait a minute....)
