Most had Auto Rich and Auto Lean settings, in addition to cruise.

I watch something a while back on History channel about the P-38 and Charles Lindberg taught our guys how to lean it out and get better fuel milage. I can't quote to long ago but I think it gained them a 400 mile out and back gain in performance. Not sure about any other aircraft.
