View Full Version : Flying/crashing under Leningrad bridges: inconsistent

I really like the quality of the Leningrad map. It's great fun to fly near ground level and watch the townscape. And there are so many bridges to fly through.

But have you already noticed that some of the bridge arches are obstructed by an invisible wall that makes your plane crash when you try to fly through the opening?

It seems to be impossible to fly under any of the stone arches, but the iron arches behave inconsistently. Some of them are open, but not all, and you won't know which one is before you have tried (and crashed many times).

On the long bridge east of the Peter and Paul Fortress (Km 348.5 - 93.5, I think it's called "Troickij Most" in real life) five out of six iron arches are open, only the northernmost one has the invisible wall, although it's not smaller than the others. Both in the summer and winter maps.

I tested the bridge objects in the FMB. I placed them on a runway and tried to taxi through. Here are the results. Objects #177-185 are from the summer map, 207-215 are the winter equivalents. An O stands for one open arch, an X for one obstructed arch.

177, 207: O
178, 208: X X
179, 209: X X
180, 210: X O X
181, 211: O O X
182, 212: O O O
183, 213: X X X
184, 214: X
185, 215: X

Now look at this picture:

It shows the main arches of bridges #208 (foreground, obstructed by invisible wall) and #210 (background, open). 210 is wider than 208, but 208 is slightly higher. The picture proves that it would be possible to fly through both of them in any fighter plane if #208 was open.

If I had my way, I would remove the obstructions from as many arches as possible, but at least from #181, 211, and from the main arches of #178, 208, 179, and 209. And being able to fly through the stone arches would be great too, if possible.

Flying under bridges is one of the features that make this sim outstanding.
