“A pirate knows no rules. He sails where he fancies, plunders as he likes and lives how he sees fit!” - Alonzo Batilla

Origins

Alonzo Batilla, born in France in the 1690s, and a wanted criminal who joined the French Navy under an alias in order to escape his pursuers, fighting in the Battles of Montserrat and Antigua in the Caribbean. He’s a professional marksman and the first to board a British enemy ship by himself and killing half a dozen British sailors.
He refused to return to France and instead, decided to abandon the war and recruited other sailors and lead a life of Piracy, plundering merchant ships in the Caribbean.

A Life of Piracy

While sailing with Jumao, an escaped slave who used to be a prisoner alongside Alonzo who was taken to jail after being attacked by a Templar ship, near Devil’s Rock, his schooner was attacked by French pirate, Olivier Lavasseur, A.K.A. La Buse, who recruited both Alonzo and Jumao, giving them a gunboat called The Serpent.
After reencountering La Buse near the Scorpion Reef, Alonzo, with the help of La Buse, managed to take the schooner, Wanderer for himself.

Later, Lavasseur and Alonzo encountered Samuel Bellamy and Benjamin Hornigold arguing about Hornigold’s code which Alonzo broke by invading a brig, despite being warned by Lavasseur. After the pirates voted for Bellamy to be their captain, deposing of Hornigold, Bellamy asked then asked for a pirate who could dispose of Hornigold, and Alonzo took the task and stealthily dropped him off at an Island. Hornigold told Alonzo that he’s smarter than the other Pirates, and that he should abandon this lifestyle, if he ever gets the chance, but Alonzo refused, and insisted on following his plans to make a fortune.

Alonzo then wondered what Hornigold would do, to which the latter replied that he had friends in Nassau, inviting Alonzo to visit one day.

Battling Slavery

Later, Bellamy told Alonzo about a ship carrying a special type of cargo, which Alonzo thought to be gold and gems. However, as they invaded the ship, they found out that it was a human cargo that was being transferred, not a gold or plunder, a female slave named Aaminah.

Bellamy informed Alonzo that pirates aren’t mere outlaws and criminals, but freedom fighters, as well, leading Alonzo to invade a heavily guarded fort, encountering a Man O’ War and two schooners. While he managed to sink the schooners, he failed to sink the Man O’ War, which was captained by Alvaro, who congratulated Alonzo on his accomplishment and promising to meet him again.

After Alonzo freed the slaves in the fort, he wanted to take the task of liberated slaves in attempts to end Slave Trade. However, Aaminah told him that it is difficult to permanently eliminate slavery, as more forts would eventually be built.

A Special Treasure

3 months later, Alonzo met with Bellamy and La Buse to invade a the Spanish Treasure Fleet, which turned out to be a decoy, and that the treasure is on a different galleon. Later, Alonzo managed to catchup with the second galleon and encountered Francis Hume and the Royal Navy, before they could board the galleon.

After engaging the enemy, and with the help of La Buse, they managed to capture the treasure and La Buse decided to quite the life of piracy, deciding that he’s earned enough plunder and wants to live freely on a remote island, stating that gold was more valuable than friendship.

Alonzo met Bellamy later in January 1717, who was angry that he left him during their previous encounter with the Spanish Treasure Fleet. Bellamy apologized, informing Alonzo that the treasure was not abroad the fleet, and that their target is Laurens Prins., a wealthy slave trader.

Alonzo started tracking Prins by looking for a merchant in Havana who supposedly knew the latter’s whereabouts and Whydah, his ship. Later, Alonzo located Captain Barnes and forced him to give out the information about Prins’ whereabouts, and spared his life. He noticed Hume’s ship leaving Havana, and started following it, and eavesdropped on the conversation of Hume and Laureano De Torres y Ayala, learning that the Templars sent brigs to attack Bellamy.

Alonzo went to inform Bellamy, unknowingly being followed by Francis Hume. The two engaged in battle, but Alonzo spared the Hume’s life and joined Bellamy to capture the Whydah.

The Quest for Eden

Alonzo and Bellamy were tailing their target, the Whydah, in the following month, coming across La Buse being attack by the Royal Navy. Alonzo was ready to help his friend, despite the fact that Bellamy was keen on capturing the Whydah, destroying the lighthouse, allowing La Buse to sail to safety.

La Buse decided to join Alonzo and Bellamy as an act of gratitude, to capture the Whydah together, which they significantly wounded leading Prins to surrender, while Bellamy’s pirates claimed and ransacked the Whydah.

After searching the ship, Bellamy informed his fellow pirates about the “treasure”, The Fragment of Eden. An artifact with powers similar to the Apple of Eden, created by the First Civilization. The Fragment also enables its user to empower their ship and boost its firepower and speed.

The Fragment was in possession of Prins until the Whydah was seized by Alonzo, Bellamy and La Buse.

Alonzo was astonished by the artifact’s powers and wanted to claim it for himself to become the king of the seas. However, Bellamy explained that this is exactly what his enemies, the Templar Order, desire, and thus warning his fellow pirates about their danger, advising them to flee before they attack again.

Later, as the weather worsened, the Royal Navy, lead by Francis Hume attacked Alonzo and La Buse, as they sailed the damaged Whydah, which also lacked firepower. King George, who captained a Man O’ War, also attacked, as Alonzo engaged him, while La Buse shielded him. King George withstood Alonzo and La Buse’s cannons, but was shocked and crippled by broadside fire from Queen Anne’s Revenge, Edward Thatch’s ship, allowing Alonzo to eliminate the Templar threat and thanking Thatch for his help.

After saving Bellamy’s life again, Bellamy entrusted the duty of protecting the artifact to Batilla, giving him The Fragment. Bellamy took over the Whydah to misdirect the Templars into chasing him.

Passing The Torch

As Bellamy left, Batilla started gathering supplies to help the failing town of Nassau, which was led by Christopher Condent in Hornigold and Thatch’s absence.
At that time, Batilla realized that hewasn’t sure if he could really protect the artifact from Templar hands, so La Buse devised a plan to hide The Fragment from the Templars. However, Alonzo discovered that Lavesseur has left, taking the artifact with him, leaving clues behind him for Alonzo to follow.

As Alonzo went to search for the artifact, he came across the wreck of Lavasseur’s ship, Le Postillion, believing his friend had been murdered and the artifact being in Templar hands. As he destroyed a slaver forge out of rage and angry, and chased a ship that left, he heard clues from captain Barnes, of La Buse’s being alive, who told Alonzo that Lavasseur used The Fragment to score a new ship, after killing its previous crew. He also handed Lavasseur’s decryption codex to Alonzo, after the latter threatened to take his life, from which he learned that La Buse sailed to Managuan to escape from the Templar threat.

Reclaiming The Artifact

Batilla continued his quest for The Fragment, across the Caribbean, learning that Lavassure joined Thatch’s new and was on his way to Charleston to leave the West Indies for good. Alonzo managed to catch up with his friend, La Buse, who informed him that he hid the fragment in Caicos Islands and kept his promise to their friend, Bellamy to protect the artifact from Templar hands. The duo sailed to the cave where Lavasseur kept the artifact.

After claiming the artifact from its location, Batilla and Lavasseur were ambushed by Christopher Condent, who demanded that they hand over The Fragment to him. Refusing his demands, Alonzo and La Buse used the artifact’s powers to boost their ship’s weapons and speed and sink the Templar’s ship.

Brothers In Piracy

A British war fleet led by the pirate, Woodes Rogers appeared on the horizon just as Alonzo defeated Condent. Alonzo decided that he’d delay the fleet, due to the lack of time, and asked La Buse to escape with the artifact. Lavasseur told Alonzo that he’d find a way to inform him of the The Fragment’s location, in case something goes wrong, just as he boarded a Portuguese galleon. Alonzo sailed to encounter the British fleet, led by Woodes Rogers, successfully allowing his friend to sail to safety.

Telling his crew to brace themselves, Alonzo boldly attacked the Royal Navy, refusing to surrender to Rogers and sinking 6 ships of the British fleet.

Alonzo faced Woodes’ Man O’ War, afterwards, yet the ship proved too strong for Batilla to destroy, as the Alonzo was unable to inflict any significant damage to the Man O’ War. Alonzo fled with his crew and luckily for Batilla and his crew, Woodes sailed to Nassau, where he was told to claim his position as a governor, deciding that Alonzo is not worth the chase.

Aftermath

After escaping the British fleet, Alonzo consulted with his crew, who were determined to sail away from the Caribbean for good. However, Alonzo explained that he had other plans and decided that he’d rather take his chance with fate than die a slow death.

At some point, while not known exactly when, but after encountering the Templars multiple during the quest for the Fragment and knowing their true intentions, as well as being them being an enemy of his friends and himself, and fighting against them, Alonzo joined the Assassins.

Fast-forward In Memory

About three centuries later, in 2014, Abstergo Industries tasked its entertainment branch, Abstergo Entertainment to look for The Fragment of Eden. One of their employees found Batilla’s memories to be the perfect match for their search for Olivier Lavasseur’s treasure, and therefore, they analyzed the genetic memories of Alonzo, yet the failed to determine the location of The Fragment.

Amazing work as always friend. :) Makes you wonder what the fragment could be used for in the Modern Day. Perhaps the Assassins have it onboard the Altair II - would kind of explain why they happily moved around in the open with the ship, as nothing could stop it.

Thanks a lot, Sorrosyss :D

Yes. I keep wondering what it can be used for in present day, if we ever find it, or what it even looks like. The idea of it being already found by the Assassins and used aboard the Altair II ship would further empower my idea that Altair II could be our next modern day base. Imagine getting invaded by Otso Berg near the end of a game and suddenly William Miles uses The Fragment, not for broadside cannons or anything, but to shield the ship, or make it go into full stealth mode and escape danger.

Yes!! Seconding the amazing work!

I love thinking about the capacity of what they can do, really like the idea of using it for a not overtly aggressive form of combat. Assassins using advanced technology for stealth, but on a much grander scale, is so cool! :o

Thank you. All of this is new to me as I've not played the Pirates game. Things would've turned out different if Batilla had the artifact when facing Rogers.

Yes. It would be really amazing to see what the POEs can do in modern day. To be honest, I play AC for MD, I loved it for MD story and First Civ. stuff. To me, going into history is a tool to uncovering things that are of use to us in present day, so I wish the next game focuses on Modern Day just like the movie is said to do so.

It would be very interesting to see them using these POE for stealth, in a manner that is not negligible that it's barely a mention of it and at the same time, not way over the top that it feels like Marvel or DC or Star Wars :D

You're most certainly welcome. I'm happy to hear that :D

Ooh, where did those 3D promo renders come from? They're nice. All I've ever seen from Pirates is 2D or isometric stuff.
