Is this the same demo that was offered 2 years ago? Or has it changed some what? I am about to down load it and willl buy a joystick tomorrow in order to play.

Also, had the graphics improved at all since the orignal IL2 was released? The graphics look great but I realize that the graphics might of improved some over time.

One more thing: Are the damage models 'realistic'? Like does the actual hits do certain types of damage? Like can you loose your brakes if hit in a certain area?

Il2's demo is the demo for IL2 Sturmovik, the original product. It's a few years old, much older than 2 though, I think about 4. I remember when it first came out, damn that was good!

If you like the demo, wait until you see FB:AEP!

Damage models are pretty realistic. They're basically the best you can get in a modern sim. Go for it. Prepare to be hooked!

So are the graphics the same in the demo as in the full version and the later expansions?

There is IL2, IL2:forgotten battles, and IL2 aces expansion pack. IL2:forgotten battles' graphics are much better than the original IL2, you can think of it has a whole new game. It has better everything. The Aces expansion pack adds planes mission and such to forgotten battles.

As cd_jakevas said AEP is an expansion pack, but IL-2 Forgotten Battles is the sequel to the original IL-2 Sturmovik. (Which is the demo is based on) The only graphical difference between the original IL-2 and IL-2 FB is some effects like spotlights, ect. But its loaded with planes, tanks and other fun stuff! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif And all Aces Expantion Pack adds is even MORE plane, tanks and other fun stuff! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif So I hope this helps you out on your decision. I really enjoy IL-2 and if your like all of us in the IL-2 community you probably will too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

The graphics engine itself is the same, but the quality of the art is generally better in FB and AEP.

In original IL-2, the planes, cockpits and maps were not as well done as ones in FB or AEP.

Verber... do yourself a favor.. and get IL2 Forgotten Battles Aces Expansion GOLD.. http://www.ebgames.com/ebx_assets/product_images/241057.jpg (http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/241057.asp)
This will bring you up to Forgotten Battles 2.0 and then you will be able to download the 2.01 and the 2.04 patches. There are differences in the graphics and the sound and in my opinion they are better overall in FB. Plus the AI and the planeset are much better.. PLUS you can use Uberdemon's Quick Mission Generator to get Full Mission Builder power with Quick Mission Builder ease. The damage models are second to none and better than IL2 as are the flight models, although some would say I am wrong on that... and some would say Im right... which isnt the point.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif BUY IT!!!! Unless you have a mediocre rig you wont be sorry. I would suggest nothing less than a 1.6G,512MBRAM,9200128/Ti4800128,SB LIVE rig. If yiour rig beats those specs you should be able to run FB on decent enough settings. Dont hem and haw anymore.... get the GOLD.. go to COMP USA if you are in the states.. they will be a tad cheaper than most retailers... or go online to EB games which is in the pick if you click the pic. Whatever you do.... be advised that this sim is very good... I mean VERY GOOD. You can look at the whiners and complainers here and draw a certain conclusion but you can bet that regardless to thier complaints they fire this sucker up at least 5 days a week for at least an hour.... unless they are on the road, fighting a war or in traction. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
COUNT ON IT!!

Get it! And what Bearcat said. I started out running on a 500 athlon, now I'm running a 750 duron and even though I can't turn up the graphics and more than 8 planes slow things down, I still get the biggest kick out of playing this, the best darn WWII sim out there!
I quess i wouldn't know how to act if could run maxed out. I sure would like to find out someday. So, once again GO FOR IT , DUDE!

Probably the best way to see the difference is on the front page..

These are original il2 shots

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/download/screenshots.php?type=il2

and on here you will find FB ones, ignore the BOB ones as they are for a new game, the PF ones are of the latest version of this game not yet released and is like the Aces add on disc.
http://www.il2sturmovik.com/forgotten_battles/fb_development_1205.php

These will give you an idea

then look at the plane lists, although the ones for ACES is not on it

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/games_elts/fb_aircraft.php

btw u can pick up both games FB and ACES add on in the uk for under 19.00

Things you will need:

* Buy original IL-2 Sturmovik, I'll tell ya why in a little bit; you should be able to get it for less than 20 bucks.
* Install update patches to that product (up to 1.2)
* Buy the Gold pack that Bearcat99 mentioned above, then install the updates up to 2.04.

This product happens to have enormous 3rd party support.

Obviously I'll recommend you to download my free mission generator UQMG (UberQuick Mission Generator), which has been in development since the original IL-2 in 2001. You can get it at www.uberdemon.com (http://www.uberdemon.com) and then get the upgrade. My latest update has a module called UQMM (mission manager) that allows you to play any mission in IL-2 FB/AEP from any flyable plane, and play any mission as a coop, plus it generates DF arenas based on any mission.

Here is why I recommend you to buy IL-2 Sturmovik: with my program you can automatically transfer all the IL-2 missions into FB/AEP so you can engoy all those almost 600 missions in FB/AEP with improved graphics and engine. It is a bargain for the price you will pay for the original IL-2. The missions are all professionally developed so it is well worth it. Besides with the updates for IL-2 alone you will get extra missions.

Other third party products that I know and use are:
* DCG - Paul Lowengrin's alternative campaign and mission generator that offers powerful features.

* Il-2 Skins Website - probably the biggest and baddest repository of custom skins for FB/AEP (In FB you can have skins for any aircraft in any type of mission, not just online)

* Il-2 Mat Manager - Want to change country markings and do some cool stuff? Use this!

* I know that there are several other utilities out there plus several additional missions produced by many of the people here and 3rd party companies.

I promise you won't get bored.
