Can anyone tell me why I have never achieved the rated top speed for a given airplane in IL-2, FB or AEP V2.01? I know the stats for the performance of many planes, but I never get anywhere near those numbers. Thankfully, all the enemy aircraft are also slow. I haven't tried online play, so I'm basing my question on FMB or QMB. I just read a posting about achieving 750 km/h in a TA-152 at 10500 m. I tried it, and achieved a paltry 300 km/h flying straight and level. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Is there a setting in config I missed?
Also on the same subject....how do you get manual adjustment of German aircraft prop and mixture settings? I do have complex engine management switched on. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Do google on IAS (Indicate Air Speed) and TAS (True Air Speed). If you switch to no cockpit view the round instrument will display TAS, the normally visible red numbers down left display IAS. In such a comparison as rated top speed you want to compare TAS value from no-cockpit view to the literature value...

Thanks Kid. I'll give it a try.

Also note try using prop pitch with german and russian crates, you can squeeze more speed out of these guys at higher altitudes when your biting the air more.

Did anyone see that or was it just me?

How do you manipulate prop setting in German planes? It seems to be locked on auto.

Shift-0 is default for manual/auto I believe, but take care to watch your RPM with the Luftwaffe rides so you don't overspeed and blow your motor.

The error for airspeed is ROUGHLY 2% per 1,000ft of altitude (about 6.5% per km), so if you want to get at least a ROUGH approximation of what your true airspeed is compared to what you're seeing on the indicator (in case you're not flying cockpit-off)..

So..

5,000m ~ 17,000ft ~ about a 34% error. (It's actually just a touch more than that, but close enough for eye-balling it.)

Thanks for the info H_Butcher. Happy flying.

When u manipulate proppitch manually be sure to stay at recomended rpm's for each plane, or u burn your engine unusuable fast, especially in the 109's.

U might want to read a bit about it first:

There is a link to "prop pitch".

Goofing with the prop pitch (as opposed to auto) to get max speed is where this sim falls flat. It's my problem and I'll deal with it . . . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
