When anyone here talks about tactics in German planes they always say germans planes are better at 'BnZ' - 'Boom & Zoom'?

Could someone tell me exactly what the 'BnZ' tactic is? Fly in quick, fire, get the hell past and out of the way? No fancy aerobatics?

Tickety boo...

From an altitude advantage, come in at a steep dive or shallow dive, make a pass on the target plane, extend a bit and then Zoom back up.

ME 163 - BnZ - I find - get altitude advantage on a formation of B17's - cut power to 0% - set-up your target below diving straight through, getting a few shots off...Then 100% power on to get back above and repeat - you are going so fast (and a small target) that the B17 gunners don't reallt have a chance to get many shots in themselves. Thats my interpretation, and it seems to work pretty well - I suppose you need a plane that can climb / dive at a reasonble rate....

It's meant for fast fighters with good firepower and not so good turning abilities. Basically, you see an enemy below, you dive and fire, and go on without turning, use your energy to get high and far, and repeat until advantage is over, then go home.

It's different from TnB, turn-and-burn, which is suited for slow, good turning aircraft, whose tactics is turn to have the enemy in your sights until you catch him or he's gone.

The fast BnZ fighter has always the advantage of engaging or leaving combat at will, hence taking all initiative. The only thing the slow aircraft pilot can do to avoid being defeated by a faster plane using BnZ tactics is presenting his nose all the time and discourage attacks from the front, or trying to offer a difficult deflection shoot.

But trying to dogfight making turns in a BnZ fighter against a slower but more agile one is suicidal. For instance, a Bf 109 or P-38 turning with a I-153 or Zero is plainly stupid. It will always lose, unless the I-153 or Zero pilot makes something really silly.

BnZ is the key for early Luftwaffe successes, and US success in the Pacific.

BnZ is a excellent tactic that can be used by any plane. There used to be a greatergreen map with I16's vs 109G2's. I used to BnZ those guys in my I16 with allmost wildly phenominal success. Its not really like the 109 is better for BnZ its more like its better for you to use BnZ in a 109 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nah, you can't dive as fast in a I-16 as in a Bf-109, try dropping on someone in a Rata from 3000 metres without breaking into small pieces and a Bf-109 climbs very well so it's ideal for the job plus it performs better at high altitude.
